Had colonetomy in 2003 Can this help your backside?

I had stage 4 colon cancer in 2003.  I had a colonectomy but rectum still working,  I have about 12 movements each 24 hour day.  I have tried several solutions to slow down my bowels, such a doctor prescribed codene, loperimide, calcium suppliments, imodium, and so on.  Nothing has helped.  I have learned to live with my lot and I now take no meds at all.  I do take a daily multi vitamin in capule form so it disolves quickly and is better absorbed into my system and a also take a sublingual B-12 suppliment often.

I have found a cream that has helped when my anus develops the itches or is just plain raw and slightly bleeding inside, especially when I eat too much and go even more times than usual.  It's called Dermarest and it's supposed to be used for psoriasis.  I use a rubber glove and a small amount of the cream on 1 finger.  I put it both on the exterior around the anus and most times inserted in my anus up to 3/4 of an inch or so.  Most times it burns a little and if I'm especially raw inside, it burns a lot for about 5 seconds.  After that, the relief is nothing less than miraculous.

This cream has been a life and sleep saver for me.  It's now Oct. 2009 and I'm living with daily diarrhea, but at least I have a way to deal with the pain.  I have been using this cream for years now without any problems.  I hope if you suffer as I do, this method with bring you some relief too.

Best wishes,

A survivor who still can smile a lot.

Hi - about five years ago I underwent a total colectomy for torrential diverticular bleeding.  After the operation the number of #2 visits was perhaps 10-12 per day but over time this has lessened to 3-4 during the day and 0-1 during the night.  I found that a high fibre diet helped to reduce the number of #2 visits - for instance try eating:-

- fresh pulverised vegetables to which organic bran had been added
- fresh pulverised fruit to which organic bran had been added
- wholemeal bread
- no junk food, white bread, colas etc etc
- home made muesli (soak organic oats + bran in milk and add grated fruit, nuts, lemon juice etc.  It looks like wet cement but tastes OK)
- you can still enjoy some Swiss cholocate..!!

I found that this high fibre diet made my motions less liquid and more "muddy/sludgy".  A bit like a liquid spillage on the kitchen floor to which you add sawdust to make the clean-up more easy.  Also I noticed that my motions appeared/felt less corrosive at the point of expulsion from the anus.  Maybe this adaptation to your diet might reduce/eliminate the need for the special cream + anal insertion.

Good luck

My son had his colon removed at 12, and we know what you mean about the many bowel movements.  My son did take Immodium for awhile, but no more.  He has learned to adjust his diet so as not to have this many BM's a day.  He knows what he can and can't eat.  You could probably switch to plain old vaseline for your rectum now that it is no longer irritated by the many BM's.  Also, Cortizone 10 is very effective if you have itching.  My son is now almost 39, is a marathoner, ultrathoner, mountain biker, speed hiker, and competes in jujitsu.  Adjusting your diet, and adding fiber can do wonders after removal of the colon. Good luck to you.
