STD Symptoms?

Hi all,

The reason why I'm posting this here is because my original thread http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/STD-Symptoms/show/1389275 has been closed, and I do think I have something worth posting. If anybody has any comments or opinions regarding anything, or if you think that I should pay another 20 dollars to have my thread reopened in the doctor forum, please let me know.

The following post was written before I realized I couldn't post there anymore, so it was addressed for Dr. Hansfield, and I didn't yet have the time to revise it accordingly:

Hi Doctor,

Sorry for coming back, but I've yet once again experienced some symptoms (this time, with some scabs/lesions present on the shaft on my penis as well), and I've been so worried about it since then, especially since you mentioned on some other threads (which I might have misinterpreted) that genital herpes is the primary cause of most genital scabs/lesions (I hope I misinterpreted what you said on the other thread).

A couple of days before Christmas, I went to a sexual clinic and spoke with a doctor there. She told me that my exposures were low-risk, and it doesn't make any sense for me to pick up any STDs. I went ahead and got (urine) tested for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea anyway since I was feeling slight tingling/burning around the urethra area (which, I think, turned out to be negative since the clinic told me that they would only get back to me if it was positive, and they didn't call/email me). The doctor then visually inspected my penis, and told me that I might have yeast infection after seeing some white substances when my foreskin was retracted. Everything else looked normal then to her. She told me to put on Canesten twice a day for a week. I did that, the symptoms seemed to have subsided.

Later on, some scabs (or dry lesions or whatever they're called, they look like the dry skin condition after a wound dries out) had developed on the shaft of my penis. Preceding that, the spots where the scabs were looked a bit like dry wrinkled peeling skin. I think the scabs persisted for about a little over a week, and just all of a sudden, they dissapeared (and the spots now look a bit more pink/redish than normal) before I had a chance to see a doctor and have them cultured. The tingling/burning feeling around the urethra (and sometimes, inner thigh, but it's hard to tell) appearead again (I have stopped applying Canesten a while ago), and still does, even after the scabs have fallen off.

Do these symptoms sound like genital herpes or any STDs to you? I'm planning to do at least a type-specific HerpeSelect IgG blood test after the 12-week window period is over. To your knowledge, is it possible to get such test here in Southern Ontario, Canada (going to the States to have my blood taken is not currently an option for me)? And if I am somehow found positive for HSV-1 only, but not HSV-2, given the symptoms and exposure, is it safe to assume that I carry it orally (despite the fact that I never recall having a cold sore)?

Thank you in advance, and I hope you're not too much irritated by my over-anxiety. I really do appreciate your expertise and patience.

Hi Grace,

Do you think these symptoms suggest herpes or any STDs? I've only had exposures as I have described in my past threads, which were all described as no risk by Dr. Handsfield.

Also, thanks very much for your reply. I'll try to get with ottmar, and find out more about IgG blood testing in Canada, and see what I can do.

yes you can get type specific herpes igg blood testing done in canada. it's my understanding you'll need to pay for it out of pocket though. ottmar I believe is the name of a poster on the herpes forum who has a good journal article on herpes testing in canada if you can find it for more info.

when you have new symptoms, be seen and follow up on them promptly. really nothing we can add at this point since you don't have any + test results for us to comment on to help you with.
