Is it Herpes? I don't know where to turn. Did I give it to myself?

Hello,

I am 21 y/o Male.

I have been infected with Herpes Virus-1 on my lips and face when I was about 11 years old, probably from my mom or aunt. They both have coldsore breakouts. I have an outbreak on my lips maybe once in two years, sometimes it comes up on my nose. I know exactly how Herpes looks, I know about two strains.

About a year ago I started getting tingling, itch and some mild burning on my genitals and my anus. I also got tingling inside  my urethra. It's not painful, but it is uncomfortable at times. Sometimes it feels like someone took a needle and pricked the head of my penis, anus, buttocks or pubic area. I have never had any outbreak in my genital area or at least I have never seen one. However, the more this happened (tingling/itch) especially when I got the breakout on my lips, I viciously inspected my genitals and my anus. I would look at my genitals and anus twenty times a day with a light and mirror in order to spot anything suspicious. It is driving me mad more and more. I just want to cry. It might be my mind causing this or this might be herpes. I am scared when I used to be little I touched the sores and my penis or anus without knowing that it is dangerous, or I might have done it accidently when I was older before I found out coldsores could cause genital herpes. I have masturbated when I had coldsores, but I think I have always washed my hands very good.

I have had unprotected sex with a girl who was tested and came up negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. I have recieved oral sex from girls but none had any visible symptoms (however I do know that can still spread).

I have first seen my family doctor. He first assured me that it is nothing after he looked at my genital area and seen nothing. He gave me anti-fungul pills, but I have not taken them. I have taken a blood test indicating I do NOT have HSV-2 or HPV or any other STDs. I have also taken a blood test to test my immunity. I tested positive for HSV-1 and my immune system is great. My doctor also assured me that I do not have genital herpes and that autoinuculation (spread to oneself) is impossible. I have seen a dermatologist who also assured me that I am totally ok and gave me some antisthetic & antifungul creams.

However, this still bothers me, I am scared to death, I am so worried that I feel hopeless, nobody seems to help me. I don't know what to do...My great life turned very sour, I cannot work peacefully, I cannot study, I cannot sleep!

Is it possible that I have given myself an HSV-1 infection on my genitals? From touching myself...PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say I've been there man.  I mean, obsessively checking with a flashlight, fearing I autoinoculated HSV-1 from my mouth to my genitals.  It will destroy you everyday if you don't let it go.  Believe the doctors.  YOU DO NOT HAVE GENITAL HERPES.  BECAUSE YOU ALREADY HAVE ANTIBODIES FOR HSV-1, YOU WILL ONLY GET GENITAL HERPES IF YOU BECOME INFECTED WITH HSV-2.  Transferring HSV-1 to your partners is a different story.  If they don't have anti-bodies, you could pass (HSV-1) GH to them via oral sex.

In the end, YOU decide how to accept the information you are given.  All doctors have given you GOOD information.  Be happy, not sad.  I'm obsessive myself, so I know it's easier said than done.  Quit checking yourself, quit researching the issue, and smile.

Moongoddess:

The word for your story is HEARSAY.  The patient said to the doctor, the doctor said to the patient, then the doctor told me.  Come on.  How could the doctor possibly know that the lady contracted GH because she had a cold sore, the man kissed the cold sore, and then the man gave the lady oral sex.
ANSWER: The doctor cannot know.
If the lady has Oral Herpes and GH, then she has HSV-1 and HSV-2.  OR, she autoinoculated her genitals during the primary HSV-1 infection and finally had, or finally noticed an outbreak.

Nothing is 100% impossible.  For goodness sake, the Cleveland Browns shut out a team 22-0 this past Sunday (not that I'm complaining).  You certainly could get HSV-2 in more than one spot.  Though, it is very unlikely because HSV-2 ALMOST always attacks the genital area.  However, there HAVE been reports of oral HSV-2 (very uncommon); and, I would gather autoinoculation during a primary infection of HSV-2 is a possibility.

Doctor, I am not trying to be rude or condescending, I am confused ...
You repeatedly say in this forum that you cannot get herpes orally if you have genital herpes, and vice versa ... but, my doctor told me of a specific case where her patient had HSV-1 (oral) she had a sore on her mouth, her husband kissed her and then performed oral sex on her and she ended up with HSV-1 on her genitals while he still tested negative for HSV.  How is this possible??? Is it 100% impossible to have HSV-2 in more than one spot?  Please help!  I really want to be able to have oral sex with my partner, but I am concerned about the spreading from my genitals to my mouth or his.  Thank you.

Doc I guess you were right..just made phonecall to get results back, and they indeed are negative. THANK YOU JESUS, and thanks to the doctor and the "regulars" who gave me some solid guidence while going through this tough time. I'm still quite baffled as to whats wrong with me, but this is definitely a load off my mind. Next step is getting an HIV test..which I'm going to try my best not to fret about the way I have the HSV test. I plan to keep visiting this forum periodically. I've met some really good people here. Take care everyone,

Every human being has unexplained aches, pains, tingles, and other body sensations at one time or another, and they can involve any part of the body.  Why can we just be sitting around doing nothing, and all of a sudden we get an itch of the shoulder, the butt, or the back (often in a place we can't reach)?  Or a headache or an abdominal cramp?  All such things are just a part of being human.  What is causing such symptoms in any particular person's genital area, rectum, or eslewhere can be no more than speculation.  But there is no reason to suspect herpes or other STD.

BTW..I was noticing them long before the thought ever occured to me that it could be GH, so I think that kinda discounts most doctors theory that it's "all in our head" or "brought on by anxiety"

Hey Doc..I know this is kinda like "thread jumping" but I feel this question is relevant..these "prickling" sensations/stabbing pains that many of us who suspect we may have GH frequently complain about...what else can cause them?? I get them on my penis prediocally, and I get them in my *** sometimes (suspected Anal Fissure/Abscess..possibly related to Diabetes, neither of which have been checked out/diagnosed by a doctor.) I sometimes also have discharge coming out of my rear end. Not asking you to be specific because I know I didn't pay and this is not my thread, but what else can cause these things? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You are obsessing unnecessarily.  The evidence is overwhelming that you do not (in fact, cannot) have genital herpes. 1) Your symptoms do not even slightly suggest herpes. 2) Since you have had HSV-1 orally, you cannot get it genitally--ever.  In particular, your doctor is right:  you cannot transfer your oral HSV infection to your penis or to anywhere else on your body. 3) Your blood test proves you do not have HSV-2.  4) Two doctors, including a dermatologist, have examined you and told you there is nothing to suggest herpes.

The level of anxiety you describe is not normal given the reassurance you have had.  You should ask your primary care provider whether it warrants evaluation by a mental health professional.  I suggest it out of compassion, not criticism.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
