Symptoms 2 years later?

Hello Doctor,

Please allow me to start by giving you a brief history.  In 2002 I was diagnosed with Chlamydia, treated with 1000mg azithromicin, cleared it right up.  I had all the textbook symptoms; discharge, burning with urination, redness at tip of penis, all this started about 3 weeks after exposure.  Two years ago I had an encounter with a woman, vaginal sex, no condom, total exposure was no more than 2 minutes.  I never had any symptoms and had all but written it off.

I am currently in a 10 month relationship and both she and I have been 100% faithful. For the past 2 weeks, I have had some irritation in my penis, usually felt after unrinating, not during, and also, at times an itchy feeling.  I have no discharge or redness whatsoever. Also, sometimes I have felt a tenderness in my testicles.  These symptoms started a few days before she went to her yearly gyno exam.  Could this all be in my head???  Also, I suffer from chronic sinus infections and the normal prescription is 500mg levaquin for 6-10 days, and have been prescribed this several times since the above encounter.  If I had in fact contracted chlamydia during the last encounter, what are the chances that the levaquin cleared it up?

Thank you very much for your help!

First, there is no certainty you had chlamydia in 2002.  Your symptoms were compatible, but among all men with classical symptoms of chlamydia, only 30-40% actually have it.  Other causes of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) were equally likely.  That said, neither chlamydia nor any other STD that causes such symptoms can persist for more than a few months.

So whatever is going on now is unrelated to the events 3-5 years ago.  Anyway, your current symptoms are not those of any STD.

Levaquin would have cured any chlamydia you happened to catch in the past.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

The chances are pretty good that the levaquin would have prevented an infection, if in fact there was one to be transmitted.  Your symptoms to me to really sound like chlamydia.  Remeber, when you have sex, there is a lot of bacteria transmitted back and forth between partners that cab sometimes cause irratibility and necessarily mean its any sort of std.
