Hey bud, are you my friend on the hep board?  if so glad to see you! Yes, I agree. Patches of duragesic are better than with tylenol, asprin etc. Never heard that the up the butt stuff is bad. I have had severe migranes my whole life. The only way I could get any pain meds or nausea drugs for them were the anal way.  Worked...Perhaps that is my downfall now.  Interesting....

One way of avoiding liver damage is absorption of drugs thru the colon, i.e. up you butt. With HepC too I learned about this just recently. When I was in college my girlfriend's father had Krohn's Disease and took something called Tincture of Opiate for his severe diahrea. Opiates dont usually come in the form of an anal delivery version but my guess is they will have to eventually for critically ill HepC patients. I am not talking about tylenol here which is clearly bad for your liver. Instead of Tyenol #3 you could get vicodin mixed with Ibuprofen to help with the toxicity to the liver. I think it is only in Brand name so far. I also read that Fentanyl as in patches avoids damaging the liver being absorbed thru the skin. That is one reason more and more drugs are coming out in patch forms. Tylenol does do a thing for me excepting for a certain kind of headache I get maybe once a year that Ibupro doesnt have an effect on.

I too have degenerative back and neck problems. I can walk and don't see myself in a wheelchair anytime soon, but was this summer after an awful fall for 6 weeks. Thankfully nothing broke and I am recovered.  Are you SVR?  I'm not, but still have to take those pain meds.  I try not too when possible. I am now off of the heavy narcotics, thankfully. Still have them if I need them, though.  As long as you don't go over the 2000 mg, I think of tylenol a day you are okay with the liver.

Wish you well!

I have a degenerative back problem. I knew with age it would get worst, but this is the first time I'm actually feeling that the posibility of not walking may not be too far away. I too have hep-c, interferon was a great help, that's why I'm so concerned about the liver.

You are correct about the drugs. If you get a narcotic that doesn't have asprin or tylenol it is much better for your organs. Pure narcotics are the best, if you have the pain that allows such a script. Unfortunately, many Dr's won't give those kind of scripst as they are triplelicpt (sp) forms and the DEA looks for those big time.  Pablo, what kind of pain do you have and what diagnoses?  Why are you worried about your organs?

The drug police don't care about soma and ty. #3. This is a bad combination as soma can put you in a "coma" and cause your vocal muscles not to work and tylenol w/cod. isn't strong enough for serious pain.  drugs like dilaudid, oxycodone or morphine can come with nothing else but the narcotic in them and won't harm organs like tylenol, but are very addictive.

You are so right. Especially new Dr's. If you get to much pain meds the drug police give them a call and ask the Dr who is trying to help you, get in trouble. It's awful. I think that Victim is one of these that the DEA is targeting for using too many drugs. Awful when you really need it.

Because "the law" is on a witch hunt to punish abusers at the expense of pain sufferers. There was a time when doctors were allowed to distinguish who was an abuser. Now doctors have non-medical law enforcement types looking over their shoulders making these decisions irregardless of suffering.

If you have severe pain in your lower back I would go to your regular doctor and ask to have an MRI scan done. An MRI scan will provide the doctor with very detailed medical information only unique to you. I have had 3 back surgeries and I am 27 years old. I am now a chronic pain sufferer and believe me it is so hard to get the medication that is so specific to me because there are all these people out there abusing pain meds. I would ask your doctor for a perscription of Tylenol # 3 and Soma. If you combine (2) Soma'a and (1) Tylenol # 3 you should feel fine for 6-8 hours at a time. Soma depresses the CNS and spinal cord - what that means is your back basically completely relaxes and you will feel much better. Good Luck.
