4 yr old just started rolling eyes to the right and opening them wide??

by Rebecca428, Feb 27, 2008 01:25PM
About 5 days ago, my 4 yr old son started rolling his eyes up and to the right side and then blinking a little afterwards. He also seems to open them very wide at the same time. He seems to be doing it every 20-30 seconds and it doesn't matter if he is looking right at you and talking or playing on his own. He is doing it during every activity and it seems worse in the evening as he gets tired. When asked, he says his eyes "hurt and itch" him. I've asked if he is doing it on purpose or is it just happening by itself and he says he doesn't know. But if I ask him to do it for me, he CAN reproduce the action on the spot. Although I do not feel it is being done on purpose because he does it too often and when he doesn't even know we are watching. I'm concerned and do not understand how this can just start out of nowhere!! I have made an appt. with a pediatric opthamologist but cannot stand the wait!! I find myself watching him constantly and i'm so worried. Do you have any advice or input about what this could be and the treatment? I know all cases are different but in your experience, have you dealt a lot with this?? Thank you so much in advance!!
Sincerely, Rebecca

I answered this on the P2P forum essentially that there is more chance its not serious than is serious but keep the apt with the Ped Ophthal.

Will you please let me know what you find out... my 10 year old is doing the same thing,  and I'm terribly worried.
I'll post here if I find out anything worthwhile.

My daughter used to do the exact same thing. It started when she was about in the second or third grade. She said her eyes felt dry sometimes. I think it became a habit after a while. She did it for a couple of years but then she gradually stopped.  She is now a healthy 17 year old.
