Night time coughing from Emphysema

A loved one was just diagnosed with emphysema. The coughing is worse at night, while the days is milder. No only is he scared about the situation, but our lovemaking is interrupted and then terminated due to the coughing, shortness of breath. Is there something he can do to ease this (besides his medication). I will help him in whatever way I can.
