Gave unprotected oral sex to a woman with genital herpes (follow-up)

Hi, I am writing in part as a follow-up to a question I had posted about 3 months ago.  At the beginning of May I performed unprotected oral sex on a woman with genital herpes.  Dr Hook replied with some very useful information and said that If no oral herpes symptoms showed up within a couple of weeks that I am probably ok.  I still have shown no symptoms of any kind but was wondering what the chances are that i have been infected but am not showing symptoms.  Would I more likely have shown some indication of infection or not?  I had read that most people if tested would be positive for Herpes I, regardless of showing symptoms or not.  Is this true and do most people infected show any symptoms within 3 months?  Thanks for any additional info.

Hi Grace,

I never had any education on STD transmission in school. They don't do that where I grew up. I moved to UK in 2005. I had a drunk encounter with a 19 year old Caucasian girl in December 2009. It was limited to performing oral sex on her and receiving oral sex from her until I realised what the heck I was doing. I hadn't seen any thing fishy with her abdominal area. The whole encounter (which was a very passionate one from both of us) must have lasted 20+ minutes. I hadn't used any protection. I stopped then and there after I came to my senses.

I was worried sick and made frequent panic visits to the Doctor. I got tested for all STD's and thanks God I was okay.

However, I wasn't warned by the Doctors that Herpes and Hepatitis could spread through oral sex. I just realised that recently when I got a second cold sore on my lip. I got my first in March 2010 and now in May 2011.

How worried should I be? Should I get tested for HSV1, HSV2 and Hepatitis? In order to save me from anxiety, are you able to indicate how likely I am to acquire HSV1, HSV2 or Hepatitis A/B/C through this encounter? Let's assume that the girl had all the diseases known.

Only a small percentage of folks contract hsv2 orally. It's not likely to happen. It's time to stop worrying about it.  There's not any reason to even test for herpes from his encounter.
