wondering....

i just had a partial mastectomy(lumpectomy) 1 wk ago after being diagnosed with DCIS....i got my pathologist results back a couple of days ago, and the results showed NO cancer in the tissue obtained during the surgery....the nurse who called with the results says that cancer (was stage 0)....2.4 cms. could have been gotten with the biopsy, but not sure yet.....i have to go back and see surgeon in 4 days after he confers with the pathologist and doctor who did my biopsy, and my hook wire placement prior to surgery to make sure that he got correct tissue.....i'm thinking that i just hope they do another MRI to b sur it's all gone....anyone ever had the same occur????

well, how my doctors have explained it to me is that LCIS is a precursor for cancer, and DCIS is stage 0 cancer.....after this was all done, the nurse at my doctor's office said that if it had been diagnosed as LCIS, they would have done an excisional biopsy instead of a partial mastectomy, which means i don't think they would have taken out as much tissue; when i have read about it online, the treatments say that when diagnosed with LCIS, the treatments are to watch it closely, maybe take Tamoxifen for like 5 yrs., and of course, if someone wishes, to do prophylactic double mastectomy in case something develops later.....anyway, i am happy now, just not totally at peace of mind...kind of want to get 2nd opinion, but after all of the stress and all, a part of me just says to wait it out til march and repeat MRI then....in the meantime, my doctor's office is going to see if my insurance will pay for a repeat MRI now....
all i can say is.....i just really didn't feel that i was ready for a double mastectomy(that was one of my choices for the DCIS), and i am REALLY GLAD that i didn't opt for one after the change in diagnosis...!!!! thanks for your input!!!

I'm confused. Aren't both DCIS and LCIS stage 0 cancer? Other than lobular cancer being more rare than ductal cancer and maybe having a different chemo regimen (not that I know that), they still would have removed it, right? And the lady on the other post who had it too said that it can't be found by mammo or US, so you wouldn't have known it was there if the biopsy hadn't mistakenly interpreted as DCIS. If the statistics and info she mentioned are true, then it seems like you were really lucky to catch this early, and the 6 month follow up sounds like a very good idea.

just wanted to update you about my case....when i went back to my recheck visit, my doctor told me that everyone consulted about my case including the pathologist who read my 1st biopsy, and that after evaluation of everything, my doctor's office got an addendum to the 1st biopsy result i had(which had shown DCIS)which read that i instead only had LCIS on the 1st biopsy.....which meant that they are saying that instead of having true cancer i had precancer.....this after i had my partial mastectomy! they are recommending a fu MRI in 6 mos.....i really don't know what to think....except to be thankful that i didn't opt for a bilateral mastectomy! and to say that i think i am going for a second opinion....! wanted to update you....

yes, i was scheduled to have 5 days of twice a day radiation until results came back with no cancer in tissue from pathologist, so radiation is postponed til all of those MDs involved are 100% sure that correct tissue was obtained....i am hoping that they will just order another MRI to be totally sure...i will find out in a couple of days...thanks!

It doesn't seem very likely to me that all cancer cells would have been removed by the biopsy. I do hope you will come back to the Forum after your appnt. with the Surgeon to let us know his opinion.
