Yes, it’s fine to paint for baby’s arrival. Concern centers around VOCs and lead-based paint. To decrease risks, use eco-friendly low-VOC paints, open windows to ventilate the area; wear masks, sleeves and gloves to protect your skin; and don’t eat and drink while you work. Listen to your body. If the fumes make you sick, James says, stop. If you have an older home, have your home’s paint tested for lead before any renovations begin. If lead is found, the paint needs to be removed properly; look for a certified contractor to help.
