adult ADD

How far into adulthood can a person find out if they have ADD? My sisters have some form of it, and my nephew is on medication since he was very young and he's 14 now. Did we get this from our parents?

Anyways, I've been thru anemia and low thyroid and now I'm wondering about ADD. I can't get overwhelmed with too much information. My husband had a physical and asked about it. he was told since he was in his 50's it was like the doc wouldn't do anything for him.

He spaces out a lot, can't do a lot at one time especially if it's demanding. Attention is a big thing with him. He hasn't even gone to college but took a vocational school.

Our son is more like me, he never had issues but our daughter might favor my husband in that they are likeable people but their attention is something to be desired. I just got a book from Amazon called "The ADD Answer" by Frank Lawlis I started reading last night.

Good question.  As I have said, I have not read it.  From the reviews, it looks like he has a lot of very good practical information for a parent  to help their child.  I think thats great because too many times, the parent doesn't get that info and just pops the magical pill into the kids mouth.
My only problem is that he does seem biased towards not using meds.  Frankly, I don't like the concept of everybody going for the magic pill.  But I also think that both sides of the argument should be displayed.  I have included a link to the review I read which gave me this feeling.  I do think that the good doctor has a lot of information worth reading and I will probably include his book in my own library.  The reason I recommended the book I did is that both sides of the argument are addressed.  Anyway, the link is here - http://www.amazon.com/ADD-Answer-Help-Your-Child/dp/0452286905/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319868154&sr=1-1

A doc who gives you a physical is not the one who you want to turn to for an ADD diagnosis.  You can find out if you have it at any age.  You want to see either a psychologist or a psychiatrist to get a proper diagnosis.
I have not read "The ADD Answer".  The reviews of it leave me with a few concerns.  I normally recommend, "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley.   She seems very unbiased to me.
I do recommend some on line sites which have a lot of useful information since they are aimed at adults by adults with ADD.  The two sites aimed at the adult ADD sufferer that you might want to check out are totallyadd.com and http://jeffsaddmind.com/for-first-time-visitors.
Both sites are done by people with ADD.  totallyadd was actually a PBS special and consequently is a series of short videos.  Quite entertaining and useful.   Jeffs add mind really reflects him.  Has much more adult interaction.  Both are worth checking out.
     Hope this helps.
