ADD issues

Hi All,

Recently this year june, i engage a psychiatrist to evaluate my son if he has ADD, he was initially counselled and observed for a period of time before evaluated by the doctor. Doctor confirmed that he has it. He seems like a happy child and he has no sense of urgency and is trusting of anyone.

My son has a problem which i did not know how to resolve. He is currently on medication but i notice after 3 months of medication, his behaviour seems to be more disruptive. He get back to his norm, distracted easily , not doing his homework ,giving half truths and disappear after school to which we could not find him at times.

I m worried one fine day my son will disappear from school and will not come home. He always disappear but comes back by 7pm. Despite reminders , punishment and constant counsel from relative/teachers/parent, he is still doing it. I have begun to give him a harsher punishment but he will do it again , not saying what actual fact he does during those times except claiming he is on the playground.

Does he need increase dosage or theraphy? I be seeing the doctor soon this mid october, i m quite perplexed on his understanding. Doesnt he understand that people are worried about him ? Doesnt he understand that what he is doing is wrong. He will say sorry and looks guilty but the next day does it and when he comes back, he appear unaware he did something wrong. Do anyone have this problem ? I already told the teacher, no more curriculum .. i cant find him if the extra classes ends early and he disappear somewhere.

His work is noticeable more messy, Organisation skills that i taught him will be forgotten in 5 min, he keep losing his things in higher amount as well. If its not attached to his bag, he will lose all such items repeatedly and will not remember where is it.

Anyone can offer some advise ?

He is 8 yrs old. I just bought a GPS tracking device.. intend to put in his bag , sew it in such a way he wont meddle with it. Kids like to meddle with gagdets. Phones are not allowed in school. He need to use a public phone.

He doesn't really have a best friend. More likely is he has many friends but none who is really close to him. He is much more at ease with adults rather than children. He loves to talk to old grannies or auntie etc which sometimes i reminded him not to talk to stranger.. you nvr know..

Thanks for the book recommendation, i look it up.  Initially doc visit is 3 week then extended to 3 months.. Singapore's work environmental is not exactly family friendly. . you only have 2 week of annual leave.. You dont have child leave once your kid reach 8 yrs old which is extremely ridiculous. .

Your doctor should have told you that all doctors always start the child out on the lowest dose and then wait for parent feed back to decide what to do next. I am a little surprised that the doctor started him on meds and then didn't check up on him for at least 4 months?
Anyway, what you describe is very common for a child who has adjusted to his meds and needs a slightly higher dose.
I do get the feeling from your description that you doctor has also not given you much information about ADD.  Thats sad because the medication is just one small part of the treatment.  I suggest you get the book,  "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley.   It will help you a  lot.  Its about 10 dollars on Amazon.
Finally, what the heck do you mean he disappears until 7 at night?  That is not right.  In the states, the schools have a legal obligation to watch the child until a parent  takes custody.  Of course, I do not know how old the child is - how old is he?   But either way, you don't punish him for not getting home.  You make sure he gets home.  Give him a cell phone with a gps tracking and see where he goes if nothing else.  But got a pretty good feeling that his meds are wearing off, and he is going to a friends house.  I would talk to his best friends they will know where he is going.  Get involved.
