Son has tics while on adhd meds

Thank you very much....very helpful.
He has an appt today and he is aware of his tics(says his neck is annoying him)but he really likes the fact the he feels more in "control"in school so he is going to speak to his DR about it.We are trying to treat him as mature as possible in this matter and he really appreciates the fact that we are treating him with more responsiblity although any final decision of course will be made by us.

I did a search in the medhelp forum.  There are a bunch of posts.  This was a pretty inclusive one in terms of overall information, but you might want to take a look at some of the other ones..  Understand where you are coming from.

I understand all of this that you are saying but we have tried the conventional way of trying to get him to slow down,focus and concentrate but he is a straight A student with a great disposition but he has regressed academically and his maturity level has also taken a step backwards.He went from a kid who was totally focused to an impulsive sorta lil kiddish type of demeanor when we took him off the meds the first time.We asked him what he preferred to give him the choice and he told us that he is more focused in school since he is back on them.He is a only child and believe me when i say i try to play and spend alot of time with him but i work full time so it has been very hard lately but now he has some playdates and has a buddie who comes over on a daily which frankly he didn't have because of his impulsivity and lack of just focusing on the one thing plus i think his immaturity wasn't allowing him to realte to the other children.I realize that my son has issues and i'm am trying to be the best advocate for my child but its breaking my heart when i see a child who has so much to offer but can't control his impulses.I'm just venting here...trying to make heads or tails of this.

I  say you take him off the medicine know matter what the doctor says and have your son checked for seizures. Some of the medicines can cause seizures and then very hard to stop them.Like Adderall and Concerta.My son was on both of these and changed him and not for the good.I would tell your son doctor that you want to have your son get and EEG and don't take no from him or her,Demand for for it and any other testing you want done.Doctors and Teachers these day always seem to think that every child who is not lisening or working well is add or adhd.They really need to do there jobs and check for everything ,More children on medicines these days than there ever have been.And they are not thinking about side effets these medicines ar e doing to the people and there family's.

also try giving your son Omega 3 Vitamans  and B6 it Can help ,because I have seen it help my son with his learning and staying on task.

A lot of the medicine they have parents give there child are like speed and what people who are on the street that are druggy's  take and can't seem to ever get enough of.

I have really done research on this and its a wait and see if its goes away but my wife is not as patient as i am(she wants to take him off the meds).I also notice its very strong when he is doing some activity and i'm trying to help calm him down by showing him to breathe in and out to calm himself so he doesn't start twitching but i feel like i'm holding him back from enjoying what he's doing...caught between a rock and a hard place here.He has been alot more calmer and concentrates more on the task while he is on the meds.

Hey tony,
  I am sure you probably have done this, but the child's doctor is the best one to answer the question.  You need somebody who has dealt with the many ways "tics" can go.  That way the doctor can give you alternatives, timelines, etc.

No, it's not worth waiting it out.

I did just that, and they just got worse and worse. Ultimately I quit the meds, but the tics never disappeared. I would try to quit and see if it disappears. If it doesn't the damage is done anyway, and he could perhaps start again and treat the tics with botox or an antipsychotic on the side.

How old is your son? If I were you I would not treat with amphetamine based products. How I see it, it can't be good to affect the central nerve system of young people.
