Meds - are they worth it

Is there anyone out there that can tell me are there any benefits to medication? I only ever read about the side effects and bad experiences people have with them, especially on children! I'm trying to decide whether to put my 7yr old son back on meds after 8 months on concerta with shocking rebound effects at night, which really took it's toll on us. Are they worth it?.

alright sooo lets take it from me.. Im 19, and have been on adderal, vyvanse and concerta... done them all since i was 12! my little brother started on adderal when he was... 7?? or 8.. BUT! let me tell you this... adderal, for a child i belive should be on very low dosages! and trust me this is because if not, he will NOT get to bed at night... the reason i would say YES is because  person with adhd normally will overeat, and do bad in school, on my adderal i got straight a's WANTED to go to school, wanted to do my homework... when i did not take my adderal.. you better bet that i was NOT happy to go to school... half the tim i didn evengo... when i completely stopped taking adderal, i dropped out of high school my SENIOR YR! so im telling you, i think it is best to put him on something... vyvanse is the best one out of them all because you dont get that gittery feeling.. but i would deffinatly say that he should be on something!! ep because of school!! also these medications will help with weight, so yo dont over eat... BUT with aderal you want to be careful because it will make him not really want to eat at all... please feel free o ask me ANY questions, ive been through it all with these medications

Yes every medicine has side effects. But know days in the US the  doctor tell you not to give your children pain killers unless you have to and cough medicine is not to be used.

But they give children these drugs that have all these really have bad side effects .

they shouldn't be given them anything and us parents should be say know to them and asking them to find another way to treat them. Also they should check for other things that are going on beside add or adhd.

There are may things that can cause a child to do things beside just them having addd or adhd .Like lenoxx gastro syndrome or  landow kleffner syndrome, along with others.

The doctors need to run test for everything to rule out other things ,and send them to someone to talk to about what is going on with there loved ones life.

Hi
My son has been on methylphenidates since his diagnosis just before his 6th birthday. He started on short acting, Ritalin/Equasym, then moved on to Concerta a few years later. He is now almost 15. He is doing great. He has struggled with weight gain but he had problems that way before he started on medication. He was below the 10th line for weight before he started on meds and has gained over time. No one really worried about it too much. Our dietician gave us plenty of advice on a high calorie diet for him and as he was much happier with himself on the meds we have left him on them. We were also given loads of help with behaviour management for him. Between both meds and behaviour management we have a child who is a fabulous person and a great member of the family. We wouldn't change him at all.

I have known some folk for whom Concerta was really not the right medication but there are other options if medicine is required. In the UK we have various immediate release methylphenidates as well as ones which last up to 8 hours or 12 hours. There is also Straterra and Dexamphetamine. I think the US has even more choices. SOmetimes it is the way the medicine is delivered that causes the problems rather than the medicine itself.

All medications have side effects including the simplest pain killers or the medicines we use when our children have fevers. Nothing is without a risk.

side effects were big loss of appetite ended up in the bottom 10% for height and weight for his age, lost almost 3 kg in 8 months. developed tics, throat clearing and a dry cough every 30secs or so, some days worse than others, biting finger nails and ripping skin around nails really bad, became quite nervous and lost confidence in himself.
at night around 6pm-7pm would rebound his behaviour was extreme hyper, loud and totally out of control, could not get him to sleep till 11pm-12pm.

concerta worked as it calmed him down and levelled him out for the day, but I didn't like him on the rollercoaster of being up and down. I'd rather deal with him the way he is than put him through that again.
That sounds awful what happened to you're boy,
neurotherapy helps calm the brainwaves down and puts them in correct  frequency, you could look into this it's a very promising and new technology.
if I try anything else it would be more neurotherapy or maybe maybe strattera way down the track. at present he has 4 eye Q capsules per day and they help with his frustration and impatience and is slightly easier.omega3 and omega6  thats all he has at the moment. best wishes to you

what side affects have you seen with the concerta?

my son took concerta until we found out he was having seizures at night time and didn't even know it until the doctor finally sent him for an egg and thou it would come back,

and his seizures have gotten worse and the medicines we tried are npt working and had to have surgery on the 24th of june the VNS  and wont know if that is working for awhile.

and conerta can cause seizures and can not be reversed once they start with out trying medicines and other ways may have all his life, and now not sure how long his life will be, and will have to be taken care of by someone if something where to happen to me or my husband.

the side effects are not worth it because you can be dealing with not only the add or adhd but other things as well.and my son is not on anything for his adhd because for 1 I would never put him back on after what we have been threw and the doctors say the medicine can mke the seizures worse then they are already.

I would never want any one to go threw what we have.
