ADD/ADHD can be diagnosed with diagnostic tests once the child reaches adolescence. The tests are somewhat subjective and a good diagnosis depends on the skill of the researcher/doctor/practitioner doing the tests.
The brain scans that Sandman mentioned are a really new science. As he said, accuracy is questionable. Most insurance won't cover that.
You'll have to wait until the child is a little older. There is no sure fire test. You may be able to get the school to test or have a Psychiatrist do it.
If your question is do they test for adhd in new borns, the answer is no. The only test I know of is a brain scan - which is expensive and not something that you would want to put a young child through. Furtermore, I am not sure how accurate it is.
You do have reasons for concern since ADHD is hereditary. But, if neither your or his dad have it, your chances would go down. The best thing that you can do is to learn about ADHD, so if by chance that your child does wind up with it - you are able to help your child become all that they are meant to be.
