Addictive Personality

Is there such a thing? If so, what's the remedy? Since I was in my teens it seems like I have been addicted to something; cigarettes, pot, meth, alcohol, coke, x......luckily, I have quit all of these (with the exception of, I drank and smoked cigarettes for the 1st time in a year 4 days ago, haven't since then though) Anyway, it seems my new addiction is food. Not so much just eating it, I obsess about my weight. I am very overweight, in my opinion, and it consumes my thoughts, just like alcohol use to. It sounds crazy, but how can I quit this cold turkey? I cant imagine trying to change the way I think about this. If I were to finally be at my goal weight, then what am I going to move on to? Will I live the rest of my life addicted to something?

I also have an addiction to food.  And what ***** is you can't just up and quit it like coke or pills.  You have to learn to utilize food correctly in order to live.  Slippery slope indeed.  Food's there when I'm happy.  Food's there when I'm sad.  Food's there when I'm bored.  It bites.

Good luck to you.  I haven't bothered with the eating disorder sections of the forum yet.  Maybe you'll find some help there.

Yes, there is such a thing as Addictive Personalities.  Try looking into Anxiety Disorders too.  Reading up on those changed my life.  In particular, OCD.  Now, everyone thinks about "Rain Man" when they mention OCD...but this has many forms and many degrees of severity.

The only cure, in my opinion, is to fill your life with positive "addictions".  Exercise, hobbies, creativity, music, writing, working, volunteering, etc.  Yes, they don't give you the quick fix of drugs, food or others, but they are WAY more fulfilling and in the long run, better.  Always make goals for yourself...even if they are simple.  Boredom and idle time are the worst enemy.

My life in highschool was great.  Was balanced..played sports, was into school...friends, etc.  When I went to college, I quit sports and that's when the drinking and druging started.  I know it seems crazy, but the decisions you make now WILL affect your life down the road.  We are all living proof of that on this site.  IT is harder to choose the good things over the quick fixes...but in the end, your life will be filled with so much more.

Good luck and keep posting...
