Bush Proposes To treat contraception as if it was abortion

I lifted this off of moveon.org. I'm furious about it, and i rarely get angry at ANYTHING. Zealotry or just plain greed, it's just despicable.

--------------------
Can you imagine living in a place where birth control is considered an "abortion" and health insurers won't cover it? Where even rape victims are denied emergency contraception?

It seems unbelievable, but the Bush Administration is quietly trying to redefine "abortion" to include birth control. The Houston Chronicle says this could wipe out dozens of state laws that protect women's reproductive freedom and protect rape victims.1 Access to basic health care for millions of women would be jeopardized. And it's being pushed as a "rule change"—meaning, it doesn't need congressional approval.

Can you sign an emergency message to Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, whose department is considering this rule change right now? Tell him: "Contraception is NOT abortion. The Bush Administration's proposal to change the definition of abortion and reduce women's access to birth control must be stopped."

Clicking here will add your name to this message:

The best way to beat back this proposal is to show Secretary Leavitt massive public outrage—that's why today we're launching this petition jointly with Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Together, we'll deliver every signature to Leavitt. You can help add to our momentum by forwarding this message to friends.

Here's what some others are saying about this proposal:

The draft regulation would define birth control as abortion...it could deny access to critical family planning for women across the country.—Letter signed by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and 26 other senators.2

The draft rule could void laws in 27 states that require insurance companies to provide birth control coverage for women requesting it [and] laws in 14 states requiring that rape victims receive counseling and access to emergency, day-after contraceptives.—Houston Chronicle editorial3

The administration needs to stop playing word games with women's health and state clearly they will reject any regulations that will undermine women's access to basic health care.—Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.4

[It's] a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right... —RH Reality Check, Information and Analysis for Reproductive Health5

The birth control pill, the IUD, and emergency contraception might all become unavailable—illegal—as a result.—Brigid Riley, executive director of a Minnesota teen pregnancy prevention organization6

I doubt that'll happen. Then again, it would be interesting to see him try. guliani tried just exactly that in NYC right after 9/11... and got told in no uncertain terms...

"No way!"

And he was popular (why I don't know).

Then again, the American people have shown an astounding ability for running scared and being herded like sheep.

Frankly, everything we've become reminds me of what the USSR was like at the height of it's power (...right before it collapsed).  The same violating of rights, the same scare tactics, the same throwing out of the constitution...

Lame ducks can be dangerous. You've gotta watch what they do. In these last months, a lame duck tends to do whatever they can to aid in their own financial success after their presidency ends. It looks like Bush is staying in character with this one, and sinking to the lowest, greediest actions he can.

Well said Savas !

I can't believe the Bush administration.  It's like they are untouchable and can do what ever they please.  Someone please impeach these guys !  I've signed evey petition for impeachment, and I see millions want it done. Yet nothing happens.  I have lost faith in both parties. It's just insane !

This is the social side, where we discuss issues...have fun... etc...

I'm not a big fan of "moveon" myself, but i recognize corporate greed when I see it in action. The whole plan here is to make contraceptives unavailable through health insurance, simple as that.

This will end up hurting us "little people", and making big bucks for the companies involved.

Frankly, part of recovery SHOULD be political and social awareness. Learn the issues, make a best educated decision, and become involved. Many addicts after years of living "alongside but not a part" of society need to learn how to become socially responsible people again.

So... if you want to be an iron clad, gun toting republican, or a weak kneed, daisy carrying liberal, that's fine by me. :)  As long as everyone gets INVOLVED.

This is our country folks, and we're supposed to decide it's future.

We turn more and more power over to a small elite group of individuals every day, and it shows in the bad decisions being made.

Let's exercise our awareness. They say you need to get reconnected to your family, friends and people as the beginning of recovery...but it goes further. We are a NATION. Connect to that, and you'll never be alone.

Dude....going to moveon.com was your 1st mistake...though i agree the conservatives are a little crazy....The left wing (move on) is even crazier......

Think about this Bush goes way over the top on people not having sex before married and not killing the baby or pretending it did'nt happen..
Move on goes over the top with have sex anytime you want and kill any baby you want and pretend it did'nt happen all you want...

So they both have a point......Also do you know about George Sorros ? he funds the thing....
