Thanks sara !! I get to get in on the looncam this year :) I had the noise on with the owls and it was driving gary mad lol lol
Wow,what a beautiful bird,I don't think we have loons in Australia.
They are very clumsy birds on land as you will see. Both male and female tend the eggs. Good luck telling the difference!!!
loons, and coons, and eagles and owls....here we go again. nothing to eat around here for a while! LOL!
Thanks, Sara! This loon is just beautiful. I'm not sure if that's its real coloring or reflection off the water.
Haha, Lisa. I know exactly what you mean about the owlets. I got used to the noise.
We should be seeing another egg here in the next day or 2.
Jade, they are really beautiful to see when they are on the lakes. Most of them are in Northern Minnesota. They are worried about the newer ones as they migrate to the Gulf. Not sure what the oil spill will do to them. The Loon is our State Bird so they are very protected here.
I was wondering the same thing about the color..
Yes it was funny I can listen but our house is small and no matter how low I had it he could here them lol. The lapping water is relaxing. I wonder if the loon chicks will be as noisy ?
The loon chicks dont make alot of noise but are very busy after they are born. They are born with fluffy feathers on them and they like to run up and down their parents backs. Usually they leave the nest about a day after they hatch and they ride on their parents backs as they are very vulnerable in the water being that little. Northerns and walleyes see them as food.
I can't wait to see the chicks! How many eggs are normally laid, Sara? I appreciate your updates and continuing lessons. I can only check in sporadically since the up and down motion of the lake makes me nauseous and something I didn't expect. : (
Where I am we can't see any loons per se However we do have some crows, a squirrel, a rabbit, several blue jaays and the loon-y toon who lives across the lane.
Usually they only lay 2 eggs. The color of the eggs this year are awesome. Isnt their nest messy?!! It wont be too much longer and you will see these bugs that drive the loons nuts. Those type of bugs only bother them. The other loon that isnt sitting on the nest will swim out a bit and watch for predators and will call to the one sitting on the nest alerting that one of danger. You may see some other loons in the area and they will fight. Their beaks are very pointed for a reason....the dive under water and do the "sternum stab". It is pretty vicious!!
OK, my friends... here is the best video for all the owls&cats lovers...
a friendship between a cat and an owl

Okay - that was VERY cool. Thanks laurel. :)
Second year in a row---I need to be rescued. NEVER introduce a new addiction to me. Last year, and Sarah will attest to this, I woke in the middle of the night waiting for the Loon eggs to hatch. I took my laptop into the bedroom with me. I cried when the last ones did not hatch and had to be taken from mom. Here I am again. I talk to them---and that is just the tip of it.
I figure by the time the season is over I will need marriage counseling......
How about just generalized counseling!!!! lol
Um....are you trying to tell me something? ROFL
When the men in white coats turn up at your door IBKleen,we'll be there for you.
We understand,it's OK
Thank you Narla, I need all the help I can get!!
Please don't tell DS that she could get 50 bucks if she had me committed, I don't trust her.....
I get 50 bucks for everytime i drive you nuts!!! LMAO
I just checked our girl out. She's still sittin' on her eggs (lol) keeping a close eye out over the water. Is the nest messy, Sara? I just figured that was the way it was and I would imagine each stick is placed very carefully. I'll take a Dramamine tomorrow so I can watch it during the day. Much easier at night when the water is calm although I checked in a few days ago and lake was almost like glass.
You're a crack up, IBK. I know how you feel, too. I was very attached to the owlets - was on the edge of my seat and cried when the first step out of the box was taken. And I got way too carried away with the pictures. Next will be pics of the baby loons. I can't wait!
I hear the loon making a noise like it's clicking it's tongue or something...and what I suppose are geese honking, crickets, frogs. A lovely loony evening : )
I saved that video, too, Laurel. I sent it to some family and friends. Wasn't that the best?? Music sounds like John Cougar Mellencamp in spanish!
