Codeine

I am having to use codeine at the moment for pain,I have sciatica and the pain is impossible without the meds.My husband is keeping them and making sure I only take them according to the doctors directions,2 x 500mg paracetamol with 10mg codeine every 6 hours.I only bought 24 tablets and will only take them while necessary,I felt bad taking them but the pain had me in tears.
I will keep talking on here and let you know how I go.But hubby is being very strict with them so I feel as though there is control.

Morning hun!

I also suffer with sciatica and I would not wish it anyone. I do know the pain and I feel so bad for you. Denise, we are addicts and have to always be aware and accountable for our actions, behavior but we are not martyrs. There comes a time for many of us that pain medication is necessary and as long as we keep ourselves in check and only stay on the medication as prescribed and for as long as prescribed then it can be beneficial. You should not have to suffer is what I am trying to say.

That was a great idea to give them to hubby and let him dole them out according to the prescription.

Has your doctor spoken with you regarding surgery? Physical therapy or acupuncture? Those are 3 of the things I did when I was first diagnosed. I still have it but it is not as severe as it was in 1985 after the surgery. Let us know what the doctor has said.

Again...good job at putting the safe guards in place and enjoy your Christmas!!!

It's okay Denise. Just take it and take enough to be comfortable!  Use the heating pad!

Just got back from the chemist and was told I can't take Advil because it can also elevate blood pressure. So it looks like I'll have to rely on the codeine for now.

My blood pressure without meds got as high as 200/150,so I have to be really careful.they thought I was headed for a stroke.I'll go to the chemist today and see if there is anything else I can take.

Advil/Motrin is an OTC here. It's an NSAID (anti inflammatory kind of like aspirin but not).
It relieves pain.  I didn't know that Benadryl caused high B/P. I know my Mom takes it once in awhile and hasn't ever had a problem and she has sl. high B/P.  Ask the pharmacist. Sometimes muscle relaxers help sciatica,as well. I know it's a drag!!  I had a problem with this a while back and went to see a chiropractor finally. I saw him for 6 days in a row. On the 7th day,he was able to get my back re-alligned and the pain was gone!!  I asked him to marry me!!  LMAO

Feel better!

Hi Denise--

How are you feeling?  I just wanted to say that I think you should take the meds on a schedule. You know, every 3-4 hours. If the pain gets really severe, it's so much harder to get relief if you wait too long.  Also, you don't need to turn back your tracker to zero
in my opinion. I'm sure others will agree!

Feel better Honey!  Post when you can--

Thanks,it's even worse this morning, but I am putting up with as much pain as I can before I take anything, this is the 3rd time in two years that I've dealt with sciatica, the first time I went to the hospital and you're right mangee there is nothing they can do so I'll just bear with it.

Sciatica is extremely painful & I think you should certainly take your pain medication.Having your husband hold your pills is a really good idea & I do the same thing with my pain pills.I hope
you start getting better real soon.Best of luck to you & I hope you have a pain-free holiday.

I had sciatica so nad one time that I had to lie on a matress on the floor. It was so bad I couldn't stand up. Turned out that I had pulled a tendon in my back other than the sciatic cords as well. The combination for the two was absolute agony. I crawled up the stairs to the bathroom on my hands and knees. The pain was so intense that I phoned the doctor and he wanted me to come to his office. I told him I couldn't stand up and that I couldn't come to his office. His following advice was to go to the hospital. Now , if I couldn't come to his office how in the world could I go to the hospita. and what good would it do. Sciatica and a pulled tendon have to heal themselves as he well knew and I wanted something to dull the pain. He said that the only way he would prescribe was to have me come to his office. As soon as I started to get better I changed doctors. It took about six to eight  weeks for the tendon and about two weeks for the sciatica to heal. I might also mention that I went those weeks without pain medication and still don't know how I survived.

Thank you all for your comments,I know there is nothing else I can do so I have accepted that I need the meds, and I have made myself accountable.
I've had a very painful Christmas day and I am sitting here at the computer with a heat and vibrating lumber massage cushion behind my back, hopefully it won't take too long to get over this.

Thanks for the support

As long as you are taking them for the right reasons you shouldn't feel bad at all. They are there for a reason. You are holding yourself accountable by having your hubby hold them and by letting all of us know here.
I too have sciatica so I know the pain it brings at times. There's no reason to live life completely miserable. If you need something for pain, you need something. Do not feel guilty.
Hope your pain subsides very soon.

Merry Christmas!!

Oh Denise...I'm sorry for your trouble. You're doing the right thing so don't worry. I do agree with everything IBK told you. We can't suffer in pain!!  It isn't fair and it isn't right.

Hope you feel a bit better by the time you read this...

Merry Christmas!

Narla sorry to hear you are in pain, I myself still suffer pain due to my spinal injuries and I empathize with you. IB is right you shouldn't have to live in pain you have the tools and knowledge to control your meds so you will be OK. I have found alternative methods that have helped me somewhat like Acupuncture, Yoga and streching, breathing exercises. I hope you feel better soon and Merry Christmas---Rick
