Went to my doctor because my herniated disc was sending shooting pains down my legs. Guess what he offered me....again. Oxycontin. I said,'No thanks, you gave me that last time it erupted and I spent several months getting it out of my system.' Got a prescription for tylenol 3 with codein and never took one of them. I used Ice, hot bath and a heating pad. Finally got it to ease up and now I am almost in good shape again. Sometimes you just have to go with it and let it run it's course. As you can see I am patting myself on the back. It would have been easy for me to accept the oxy or take the Tylenol with codein to ease the pain but I was able to convince myself that I was stronger than the pill and the pain. I know I am boasting but their is a madness behind my motive. If an old coot like myself can dredge up some of his inner strength and willpower, so can you. You never know how strong you really are until you dig down deep and bring out that power that you never knew was there. Look for it, because I promise you that if you want it bad enough you will find it. I see a lot of new names here of late. I am the old horse that gallops through here every now and then. I neigh a lot while I am here and browbeat everybody who posts in a negative way. You can't get anywhere unless you are positive about yourself and have faith in what you can do. You will be surprised how many have gone from negative to positive and have found the road that they were looking for that was hidden behind all the self doubts. Stop doubting yourself, you are better than that. Shout out to the world,' Get out of my way world because here I come.

I believe oxycontin is one of the pain meds that originally were used to treat terminally ill patients? I think Doctors can be blamed for handing out that stuff so freely. Same with most meds in my opinion. My hats off to you Mangee.  I wonder what some of that stuff does to the body physically after taking it so long? I mean, there was a reason, that they gave it to only terminally ill people?

It's a little different eagle, and not all pain is the same. There's acute pain, and there's chronic pain. Chronic pain is significantly worse, as I've experienced both.

Furthermore I'm not an addict as I'm using the medication to actually be able to live my life. It doesn't make me a zombie, it actually allows me to get up and do things I want to do. The pain makes me a zombie, and forces me to stay put and forsake my life.

Who am I? Why am I here? What brought me to this point.? Where do I go from here?  All four of these questions need to be answered and you are the only ones that can answer them. These are very tough questions but they need to be answered. The first three need to be answered before you can set your sights on the answer to the fourth. Self examination can lead to a many answers and you have to find out which answer is the one, that takes you to the next question. Once you have obtained insight into the first three and are ready to answer the fourth you will have a good, solid foundation on which to plan and start your journey. It will be a lonely road and a long one but a road that leads to a world that used to be yours a time go. Every step, every obstacle you overcome, brings you closer to that dream that you never thought was possible. It is time to turn that dream into reality. Many have done it before you and many will do it after you. Why be left behind?  The question is ,how bad do you want it and how hard will you work to make it so? These last questions are also needed to be answered and answered before the others. Once you have given yourself the answer to these, finding the answers to the others will be much easier.

I doubt that it was easy for mangee ..... he just did it. Pain will not kill you. I am a Nam era vet and have seen some people in very legitimate, sometimes fatal, situations just plain keep functioning....... If mangee did it, so can I....and so can you. I have done it. And even though I live with severe pain - I do live today......not like when i was pain free and a zombie from narcotics. Dig down deep, find your "war face" and put it on. You are in a fight for your life. But you can win the war. Get strong. Think positive. And remember - fear will kill you. Yesterday was the only easy day. And you can whine and complain tomorrow. Today you live.

Wow, if only it were that easy for most people. I take issue with "If I can do it, so can you". Guaranteed my current nerve pain is 1,000 times worse, because I've tried everything and nothing helps.

Geez, I wish Ice and heat would fix my problem.

I C.......ok, cause there really isn't much a doc. can do, but i hear you.  Doc's barely pay attention anymore.  he prolly just looked in your chart and saw oxy and without a question?.......I'm glad my current doctor is not like that.  It took me screaming and crying on the phone with him to give me Vicodin 10 for a few days after I had a cortisone shot that I got.......

I really dislike doctors.  Tylenol #3 is fine with me.  I never had a problem with that ever.  It wasn't till it was upped to Vicodin that I got bit.

I expected that he would have prescribed something not as volitaile as oxy. The fact that even though I had complained to him that oxy had addicted me, he still attempted to prescribe it again. In the end he gave me Tyleno 3 with codeine. I decided that there was no true solution so I just let it run it's course. I endured the pain rather than get hooked  on codeine. His statement when he first gave me oxy was, 'Seeing as you are eighty years of age it should be okay'. At no time did he say it was addictive. When you go to a doctor you give him your trust. It is up to him to try to resolve the problem without causing further problems.

My question is ......If you went there complaining about pain.  What did "U" expect the doctor to do for you?  I don't understand?

In regards to,'Will they never learn,. I was speaking of doctors who attempt to re-prescribe a problem causing drug even after the patient explains that the drug is causing or has caused problems.

Way to go!!!  Feels good to say no doesnt it.  We are in control of our destiny and you are right......if you want it bad enough you will do whatever it takes.  As always great post!!!
