37 weeks pregnant taking 3 norcos a day

Hello, im 37 weeks pregnant and im taking 3 10/325 norcos a day, at least 6 hours apart. I was perscribed them before i found out i was pregnant for chest pain. Now i take them because its almost impossible to stop. This has been my biggest stress issue my whole pregnancy. I let my obgyn know rite away. Theyve told me the risks and have been keeping an eye on the baby the whole pregnancy. At 7 months they sent me to a pain manegent dr I asked him about suboxone he wasnt able to perscribe me suboxone becuase it only came in a pack of 4 and i only needed one. So he decided to perscribe me a "tapering down" method of norcos. Pathetic rite. I left devistated. I told my ob what happened and they apologized. They told me just try very hard to tapper down. i try every day, but its so hard, especially when i feel like crap. i need help, im worried for my baby girl, im worried that shes gonna come out with withdrawls and my mom and family are going to see. i need advice from anybody who has been in my shoes please. i wanna be able to breast feed, im a first time mommy, i want to be normal, i dont wanna worry about sids! help please asap im due july 7th

Well that a huge relieve, one of the most important things to me is breast feeding I want to be close to her, I hate formula! And I've been extremely depressed because I've read around and it says the baby can die and all this scary stuff. So I felt like because of my stupid addiction that special something that only I can give her is gonna get taken away

You're fine.  As others have said, many women have been on pain meds during pregnancy and their babies are fine.  Your doctors know what's going on so you're okay there.  You should be thankful you didn't het on subs or methadone.  They are so hard to get off.  Some people have to increase their dose during pregnancy, so by staying at 3 you,ve done very well.  Once you have the baby, you can taper the rest or go CT.  It shouldn't be bad on such a low dose.  Stay away from the subs and methadone.

Again, I think you are doing a wonderful job coming down. And you do NOT want suboxone--it's a wicked drug meant for only those severely opiate addicted, not you. It's dangerous to stop, as well. Take your taper slow and easy, and I would think that you should be able to breastfeed with no problem by the time Little One is born. Things are going to be just fine. Just keep the doctors---and your pals here---in the loop!

Hey I'm trying to cut down a it's hard everytime I try that's why I thought of suboxone. I'm taking 3 a day. Now I know I have to cut down so I think I'll be a lot more motivated!

Thank you. I will be breast feeding that's another reason I need to stop as soon as possible because I won't be able to breast feed her and that breaks my heart

I think you are doing fine! Just keep taking them 1/2 at a time to titrate the dose down.Think of the time of day you seem to need it most--that will be the last dose you will give up.Then the second most important time, etc. Every couple of days give up another pill half. The other times of day that aren't quite so important you can power through by staying busy and talking to your baby. Please don't stress or freak out! You have enough time to do this without you or the baby being harmed. You can do this! Will you be breastfeeding? All the best to you, dear lady!

Yesterday I stuck to 2 1/2 all day then I woke up at 2am and could t sleep. That's one of the hardest parts bedtime! So I took another half. Today I'm gonna do it. I have to just stick through it. No more putting it off my baby can't be born at any time

Hi there-  Listen. At one and a half Norco per day, you don't NEED SUBOXONE or Subutex or methadone or anything. It's a very small dose at this point!

You've done very well, you see your doctors, and they know you've been on pain meds. You should be fine. Remember, SUBOXONE is a powerful opiate as well...

Plenty of women have had healthy babies after taking a lot more than you were taking so try not to worry about this, okay?  You need to be enjoying this and concentrating on moving ahead. As the one doctor said: I'd be more concerned about the addiction than anything else.

You're doing great so please stay away from Sub. Ask if you should continue to taper off or if you should stay at one pill per day from now on, okay?  Just don't worry!

That's the question I don't want you to get it from the street and try to do this on your own.
Are you still taking the 3 norcos a day?
Or did you taper at all?

I've always stayed at 3 one in morning one in afternoon and one in the evening. I can get suboxone. The reason I was wondering if that might be the better route is because the pm doctor was gonna prescribe it to me but changed his mind when all he could get was packs of four. My doctors never bring up the norcos at my appointments anymore idk why. The last doctor I talked to told me don't be worried I'm at a very low dose just try to cut back and she would look for an addiction specialist to help me. He said shes more worried about me having an addiction then the baby because the baby. But the one before her told me there are a lot of risks so Id rather be safe than sorry

Hun you are very close to delivering.
Where would you get suboxone?
Many women have delivered babies on low levels of pain meds.
Such as yourself. Have you always stayed at 30 mgs or have you upped your dose at times?

Yes I am seeing doctors weekly. The only problem is I have HMO insurance so I see a different doctor ever week. I was wondering about taking a suboxone and then just being off everything.

If you taper to fast you could cause  the baby to be  in distress and deliver too
Early. Your taper needs to be slow. Cutting out a half pill a day is too much.thats more than 10%.
We can't give taper schedules especially when someone is pregnant.
Your baby will feel every withdrawal symptom.
Are you going for weekly Ob visits yet?

I assume you are over 18? your OBGYN will know what meds you are taking prior to giving birth and depending on what type of procedure they give you IV pain meds you dont have to let anyone know. dont be stressed out just be stong and you can get through this where is the father in this ?

And I also wanted to know if my mom will find out about the norcos if she's in the room when I deliver. This is so stressful :/

Thank you. Today I've been trying to do better. My doctor just recommends to try to get down to 1 cuz then she will most likely be ok. Today I've gotten down to 1 1/2 but I'll have to take another before bed. And I'm hoping baby waits a couple more weeks to come so she can be safe

Did you go back to the prescribing doctor?
He should be the one to help you taper.

First, congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to the forum!  I know that you care for your baby because you told your Ob about ur norco situation. That my dear, is a BIG step! Not many expecting mommas can do that. That is good that you're following a taper plan under ur doctors supervision. A slow taper is the best. However, I would ask ur Ob if a taper is safe for you and ur bundle of joy, just in case. You and your daughter are in my prayers. Ps- if this doesn't make any sense, I've been up since 430am with my 2 yr old son. Lol, welcome to parenthood! God bless!! Xoxo

Hi and welcome :)

There are many women who come here with the same situation as you. A lot of docs put there patients on methadone as it is relatively safe for the baby. Since you went to a PM doc and he didn't want to help can you go to a different one for a second opinion? This late in your pregnancy they may just tell you to continue and try and taper. I dont want to alarm you but your baby will most likely have to stay in the NICU for a little while for withdrawals. Maybe a few days. They either ween the baby or just monitor the withdrawals...but the are experienced and see this a lot. Just hang in there and do what your doc tells you to do but like I said, if you can go get a second opinion and maybe discuss methadone.

Standard Protocol

When a pregnant woman wants to detoxify from opiates or other opioids, the recognized standard of care, according to the National Health Institute, is methadone treatment while under a doctor's supervision. Methadone is not known to cause birth defects nor have any long-term affects on a baby. There are other medications available for opiate detoxification such, as Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), or Subutex, (buprenorphine), but because they are "Pregnancy Category C" medications, meaning they are known to cause harmful and possibly fatal birth defects on a fetus, the are not recommended for use in detoxifying pregnant women.

_____________________________________

"If a mother stops using the drug "cold turkey," the fetus will then experience withdrawal symptoms in the womb, with may cause wide swings in the baby's blood level from intoxication to withdrawal, which often times leads to death and spontaneous abortion, premature birth, and other negative effects. The best thing for the mother to do would be to consult a health care provider or drug treatment center about a methadone program, which will be less harmful for the baby."

Take care and God Bless
