9 months pregnant and lost

Im 9 months pregnant and due in two weeks.. about a month in a half ago i started taking percocet 30mg to relieve some pain that i was having. First it started with just half of one and that helped then slowly progessed into one and now im im taking 60mg a day... i'll go two days without them and then i just go crazy and feel like i need them immediatly.some days ill even take 90mg. i dont even know how i became addicted i dont have an addictive personality and i dont usually do these types of things but i figured that it would be safe just to get rid of some pains now i cant stop myself and im really lost and dont know what to do. Its too close to my due date to be checking in to rehab but i need advice on how to stop and is my baby going to be okay if i stop now?

"I strongly suggest you stop and try to use a non narcotic pain reliever."

Those are your words, dear, and you only spoke of weaning in reference to the addicted infant.  I posted so there would not be any confusion about what a pregnant woman should do and I stand by that.

I'm not sure what you've read but this forum doesn't usually say its easy. We usually say "call your doctor"...

I hope you and your infant get well soon!

No..........., first of all, If you thoroughly read my post, you would see that I repeatedly spoke about weening. And anyway 4 years old or not, I simply gave insight from my personal experiences. If I had a question I would have asked it, I simply put my OWN personal situation on this site without beating around the bush and/ or giving ANYONE the impression that it would be simple or easy, which in my experience and from what I have read, is done frequently. But thank you for responding to MY post!

First off:  you posted to a person who isn't here any longer. The thread is four years old.

Also, we NEVER tell a pregnant woman to stop taking opiates. That implies cold turkey and that's very dangerous. The prudent thing is to have them speak to their doctor right away.

If you have a question, you could start your own thread by clicking on the orange post a question button and following the prompts!

Stop taking them, if you can. I have been diagnosed with lupus for 6 years now, I have been taking pain meds on and off since then. I also have had abdominal surgeries in which mesh was inserted, and re-inserted in my stomach and of course being pregnant worsens this. My pain management doctor and Ob-gyn decided to prescribe me percocet for the pain. I took it through the majority of my pregnancy, I gave birth to my son 5 days ago. He was 5 and 1/2 weeks early so some of his problems can be attributed to prematurity, however his withdrawal symptoms didn't show until after hours after birth. He is doing excellent now, and is going through the stages of weening quickly. However they do not give infants percocet, they give them morphine, either orally or by mouth. It's very hard to see your baby go through that process no matter how well they do. I have no definite date for discharge and he will be in the hospital at least a week or two.  Now every baby is different, and the way it was explained to me is that everything matters. How long you take the narcotic, how often, how much, and how soon before you give birth before the baby is born you take it. My baby's doctor said that narcotics normally work in an adult for about 5 hours, and the life of them in a newborn is 5 times longer than that.

So with that being said I would strongly suggest you stop and try to use a non narcotic pain killer. I just spoke about possible withdrawal symptoms for your newborn. Then there is the long (longer) hospital stay where you may have to leave your baby in the hospital. I have two other children at home and I have decided to be at the hospital the majority of the time with the new baby and it is so hard to be torn between my kids, and because they know when I leave it will be a few days before I see them, its so hard! I will be honest, your baby may go through withdrawal symptoms anyway, but my plan was to ween off my last month, but I went into preterm labor, but who knows how much of a difference that would have made.

Once the baby is on the narcotics (most likely morphine) after you have him/ her, they go on their own weening shedule- EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT!

This is my second child born while taking narcotics. My first pregnancy on them I had sugery during pregnancy, was prescribed, ultram, dilaudid, darvocet, percocet, vicodin, and still took meds for managing my lupus. That baby was born at 32 weeks, weighed 4lbs 7oz, and came home in 3 days when I did with no withdrawal symptoms! I thought it would be just as easy with this one but it wasn't. You just have to be prepared for the worst of situations, hopefully you took your prenatals regularly, and got regular check ups and ultrasounds. My OB was very supportive and even allowed me to have regular and very detailed ultrasounds to monitor the development of my baby! I wish you the best of luck!

I know in VA they can't test the baby unless the mom has been know to do drugs and is in the court system already - in VA it is against the law for them to test with consent - i feel bad for this women - i think she loves her baby but the addiction has gotten her - i feel for her - you make a good point - if she thinks about them taking the baby it may help her to stop :(

I don't know where this pg lady is from, but here in CA where I live, they will keep her baby if she isn't clean at the time of delivery, she better start thinking of that. she could loose that baby, she needs to stay clean and pray to God she don't go into labor early and still have it in her system.

I think your baby is fine go to www. safefetus. com and look up the drug - it is a class C and i took a class C med my whole pregnancy and my son is fine - class C means that it has not been proven to hurt the baby and it has not been proven to be safe either - so it is a thing that is it worth the risk - if the benfits out weigh the risks then you know - that was my case -

here is something that I found on the internent
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Return to top

It is not known whether Percocet can injure a developing baby or affect a woman's reproductive capacity. Using any medication that contains a narcotic during pregnancy may cause physical addiction for your newborn baby. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. As with other narcotic painkillers, taking Percocet shortly before delivery (especially at higher dosages) may cause some degree of impaired breathing in the mother and newborn. It is not known whether Percocet appears in breast milk, possibly harming a nursing infant. If you are breastfeeding use Percocet only under a doctor's directions.

Don't worry sweetheart....just talk to the doctor, it's the best thing to do....taper in the meantime if you can...but you have to be honest with them for the sake of the baby.  I took percocet during pregnancy too,  be careful....be honest....your baby needs you to be.

I agree with all, you need to talk to a doctor ASAP. for your sake and baby, yu are taking a chance of baby being harmed. But i wouldn't change anything until you get medical help. They will understand. Its better to be embarrased then to have something wrong with your baby. Welcome, and we are here to help! good luck

I agree with Blade, and in the mean time start to slowly taper yourself down. Do not try to quit cold turkey. Just do a very slow taper, and stick with it for your babies sake.

Since you are pregnant, I think you should just talk with you doctor...I know that may be hard, but it is your babies life your talking about.  I don't want to scare you, but your baby is getting some of the medication your taking.  So, to make sure you don't put your baby (and you) at risk, you just need to go into the Dr.

Just tell them that you have taken them and tried to quit but had really sick feelings and what would they recommend you do.  Tell them you think it's the medications, but that your not sure.

I would get professional advice on this from at Dr....as hard as that may seem.  Just be really honest and they will help you...I haven't heard of one Dr. that refuses to help a patient titriate or taper down.  With you being pregant, there may even be reasons to stay on the meds...but you need to talk to your OB/GYN.
