Darvocet Addiction or not?

Okay, after reading alot of the posts on here it sounds that I am fortunate enough not to have some of the addiction issues some people have.  I have been taking Darvocet for approximately a year and a half for muscular pain in my back.  It started out as just taking one or two a day ( not even the recommended dosage) but after several months I got out of control and took as many as 15 a day.  I don't take near that now but some days still take upwards of 8.  I have been given Tramadol and a few other things by friends but have gotten rid of them because I was afraid to take them.   I know Darvocet works for me, I just take too many sometimes.  Plus, I rarely drink alcohol while on the Darvocet.  If I do, I make sure the 6 hours or so has passed before I drink anything.  I have heard that Darvocet has Tylenol in it which can be damaging to your liver.  How much Darvocet and for how long do you have to take it before it hurts your liver?

I appreciate any truthful info anyone can give me.  I know alot of these posts are people who just tell what they think and not what the facts are.

I take darvocet occasionally for my fibromyalgis.  But, I have googled darvocet in the past and a lot of what I read is pretty scary.  Apparently, if you take too much of it - it has been know to cause people to die from OD more than a lot of other opiates.  I think it's because people think that since it's a low level of narcotic that it can't hurt, but I do think it's the tylenol.  Please be very careful with this drug!  Tramadol is also very addicting and so if you take them from friends be very careful, like you said above.

One of my aunts who was in her early 70s died from an overdose of just plain tylenol!  Apparently, her mind was going and she kept taking them because she'd forget she had already taken some and it killed her!  So, like I said be very careful - 20 to 30 a day!  WOW!  I'm surprised that you didn't have problems then!

Hopefully, you can stop the drug or at the least control it - good luck!

Hugs,
Janet

i agree with big gals pal! i was on them for 2 decades and suffered heinous withdrawals from them. if you are someone who can taper, i would try that. taper is not in my vocabulary, so i had to do it the hard way. i was taking a minimum of 10 a day, sometimes twice that. let me know if there's anything i can do to help.   sway

soory I guess I didnt answer your question, yes anything can be addictive. it doesnt necessary to be a narcotic to be addictive.

davocet is one of the lowest class scheduled narcotic, it has more tylnol in it then codeine. it is right about tylenol with codeine. The problem is that much tylenol is really bad for your liver. you might talk to your doctor, so he can move you up to something that doesnt have that much tylenol in it. if you are trying to quit, you should have little to no w/d, which is good. You might post exactly what you are trying to do so others can give you advise. there are lots of very knowledgable people on here to help. good luck

Hi,
Listen,
I started my Darvocet addiction back in 1980!
It was very addicting to me.
Don't fool yourself. Darvocet does not bother a lot of addicts, but it did me.
I also took other opiates later. BUT, doctors will usually give loads of Darvocet.
They (most) don't think it's as addictive as other opiates, but it was for me.
So, be careful!!!

I dont know too much about Darvocet from personal experience -  Ive used it occassionally over the years and never liked it-- it always made me a bit sick.. But I can tell you one thing from personal experience - my best friend's stepmother abused Darvocet for years.. It was her drug of choice.  She did not drink.   But would take upwards of 20-30 Darvocet a day.  She did this for many years (like 20+ years).  Ultimately she did damage her liver and other organs and she passed away last year from complications of abusing this drug (she was only 45).  Im not saying this to scare you, I am just saying this because its true.  Darvocet is a lower class scheduled narcotic and can be damaging when abused.  You obviously have not been using too long and I am sure your fine physically but abusing this drug does come with danger.  I would really try to limit your use and look for other ways to treat your muscular pain.  Best of luck to you.
