Even addicts will need pain meds at some point in our lives. In a post ages ago, Sarah wrote about how she handles such occasions, and I have adopted her approach (haven't had to test it yet). As long as you use according to the directions on the script, then you haven't relapsed. It's when you start using for the high, that's relapsing.
Sarah's plan - be sure that your doc, pharmacy, dentist, etc., know that you're an addict. Have someone you can trust assist you - they pick up the script, they hide the meds, they give them to you per the script. Don't get refills, and stop taking the meds as soon as OTC stuff will work, if applicable.
I took it a couple of steps farther - I told my wife that she'll have to count the meds daily to be sure none have evaporated. And (this was embarrassing) I told her about my switching out OTC aspirin that looks just like white vics, if you don't know what to look for. I did this several times when family members got scripts. I don't even like to think about the pain I caused.
Anyway, just a suggestion. If you have someone you can trust, this is an alternative to relapse or being in pain.
