Extreme Fear When Tapering From Opiates??

I have been "stuck" with my tapering of Opana because I am going through these periods of being "very scared, fearful, terrified."  I can even feel that danger is lurking around every corner in my OWN HOME.  I am on 1/4th of the dose of Opana (a combo of ER and IR) that I was on.  Has anyone experienced this?  How have you gotten through this?  If I can't find a way to break through this, I will need to go to a professional detox.  Should I try benzos to push through the fear and get off the opiates???  Thanks for your help.  Marie

I had panic attacks just THINKING about quitting.  I'd wake up in the middle of the night in sheer panic ... it was horrible.

Some wise person here once said, "the only way out, is through it" - there have never been truer words spoken.

Quitting is going to suck.  It's going to be hard & uncomfortable - both physically and mentally, but you can do it.  Every day, every hour, every minute you don't use puts you closer into being happy, whole and well.

If you stay at your present level for a while you should overcome your present problems. Then when you start taperirig again - do it very, very slowly, and stay at each new level for a period of time. If you cannot manage this by yourself, then get help from a doctor.

MArie, i thought i posted to you about this some wehere else but maybe i didn't.  Listen hon, your coming off some powerful meds,  Opana ER like i told you before is not easy, but it can be done.   Taking benzo for opiate WDS does help with extreme anxity that your feeling belive me sweetie i have it now too.  But benzo are addicting and fast too and if you think coming off of Opana is hard well the truth is benzos aew even worse.  I think you are tapering to fast, it needs to be slow and steady with a very small drop.  Why not call the NP and ask for guiandance.  All you need to say is i would like a taper plan please and she will give you one?  ANd remember coming off the pills and detoxing is just the beginning then its staying clean and thats the hard challange of them all.  So keep your chin up girl, calll the NP and get on a taper plan and take it slow very slow!!! THis is not a race.  Best of luck to ya

Hi Marie! Don't go the benzo route,,you end up substituting one drug for another as benzo's are highly addictive as well. What are you so afraid of? What do you fear is gonna happen if you quit? Is it the physical w/d symptoms,,the mental,,,pain? I think some of the anxiety that you are having now is part of withdrawal from opiates. Unfortunately,,,that is one of the things that we all have to deal with. Im sorry you are feeling this way and I wish I had the "magic" words to help fix this,,but I don't. What I do know is that you have come soooo far and are soooo close to to breaking free of this drug. You need to look within yourself and try to figure out what you are so afraid of? Hang in there ~Bkitty
