hi, i work in the area of supplements, and melatonin is usually great for sleep.
try a time-release version, you may need 3 x 3mg. an evening.
there are some people, who take melatonin, and then after a few hours of great sleep,
abruptly wake up. this is normal at first. you just take one or two more pills, and go
back to sleep. this situation works itself out normally. the time-release pills alleviate
this problem usually. buy from a reputable company, while melatonin is cheap, too
cheap means garbage. i always caution clients to avoid benzo's and ssri's, and those
type of meds if possible when using melatonin, although benzo's would be my biggest
fear. i have one client who uses an ssri and melatonin, and he does great, i know of
no major contraindication with them but observe how you feel.
best of luck.

Ativan, xanax, valium, lorazopram.... they are all benzos and all quite addictive so if you are an addict and are self medicating with these drugs albeit to deminish withdrawals, one might find themselves trading one addiction for another over time.
However, if you are under a doctor's care, which you probably should be when taking those drugs, you can take it short term while recovering physically and then be tapered off safely as it can be dangerous to stop taking them suddenly after having taken them for any considerable amount of time (over a month sometimes less if taken in large quantities).
Their main purpose is to get you passed the physical ailments of withawals so you can gain enough strength both physically and mentally to get yourself into counseling, AA or NA where your chance of relapse is minimalized.
Not trying to answer for avis, but benzos *short term* can be helpful with w/d's, but any longer than 5-7 days, and they are a worse beast than opiates, IMO. They are highly addictive, the w/d lasts longer, and w/d symptoms can include seizures. Have to be very careful with those things.
If ativan keeps you from getting overwhelmed with anxiety , you will be less likely to relapse . Take it when you need it and after awhile you can taper off .Congratulations on your 20 days .
Hey, I was just reading your comment on the melatonin and noticed that you recommended staying away from the benzos which I've seen others advise as well. I'm 20 days off vicodin and my dr has me on ativan for anxiety. Is it the addictive nature of the drug that makes you advise against? or anything else????
works very well for me I was having alot of sleep problems it straightened them out in a week . I would try to stay away from the benzos as much as you can .good luck :)
