Lynn here and need honest opinions

My counselor is trying to help me thru the restless legs and sleep paralysis. She wants to put me on gabepentine. I looked up the drug and saw it helps many people but can have withdrawals effects. I refused it and and just gunna tough it out but does anyone here have experience with this drug. It's an anti seizure med and she says it will help greatly with my anxiety tho I may be in a fog the first day or so. She told me
It will help me sleep and get thru the wd. Cause it's at it's worst right now. But i refuse to set myself back. Any opinions are helpful.

Gabapentin isn't addictive and you don't have withdrawals.  It is something that needs to be tapered off ... like you have to taper of steroids.  It's used for many things but was originally used as an anti-seizure medication.  It can have some side effects and usually they'll start you off on a lower dose and then go up if needed.  I've been on it in the past for nerve pain.  My only trouble was I had some trouble word-finding and in the beginning I would slur my words a bit.  But that did pass with time.

that was the first thing I noticed!  I actually got hungry.  The pills seemed to decrease the feeling of hunger.  I actually wake up hungry and before it would be noon before I felt the need to eat.

I'm not a nurse, but work at a clinic, and have become knowledgeable on a lot of meds. Gabepentine (or Neurontin) is prescribed to a lot of our patients who are detoxing/withdrawing. It is a medicine that once prescribed they take for a long time, and increase the dosages over time. Just what I know about it.

i have to second taking the gabapentin, as i took it while i was in withdrawal and it helped immensly .. it did help me sleep, mild  cold like symptoms and that is mild,  i had a few sneezes here and there and some mild rls every now and again..  But other than that i was up and around on day 2 and 3 doing things..  But one thing you have to take into advisment is it gives you the muchies is what i call it lol..  I was hungry all the time as we both know that when we are in detox the very last thing we want to do is eat..  but it definately helped witht hat..  i just wanted to say that it has helped me through this horrible withdrawal..  keep up the good work..

you may think im crazy but if those dreams are what your describing to me you need to cry out to Jesus for protection
your under a spiritual attack God wont let anything happen to you those dark shadows have no athorty over Jesus so next time it happens try crying out his name
and see if things dont improve and try the med it will help with the withdrawals also your in my prayers ....Gnarly

Hi sweetie, I am so proud of you that you are following through with your rehab. You will be home soon and when you are you will be in a much better place mentally and physically.keep the faith. Keep up the good work
I take gabapentin for my carpal tunnel syndrome. It is prescribed for neuropathy. I did stop taking it at times and I did not have any w/d symptoms. I would say if it would help you right now then I would recommend taking it. It is a different class of drugs from opiates. You probably wouldn't be on it for that long
Hugs,prayers,peace

I don't take gabapentin, but I am on suboxone. It too has withdrawl effects but it helps so much with detox. Under a doctor's care, they can help wean you down so you aren't as uncomfortable.

Also, I read your other post and I wanted to say that I know that guilt you have. I would lock myself in my bedroom and shoot up while my 5 year old son knocked on the door. It is almost crippling, the amount of guilt you feel, but once you are clean and you are making new memories, you will be so much happier.

Good luck,
Kres
