Made a mistake, what happens now?

I'm on so much medicine for my chronic pain and they are always changing it.  A lot of times, I end up cutting my dose in half if I think I don't need as much but still need something.

Okay, right now, before I had my coffee, I made a mistake.  I cut 1/2 my oxycontin 40 mg. in half thinking it was my 30 mg, oxycodone.  I had already taken my 40 mg. oxycontin at around 6 am like I'm supposed to.  Went back to sleep and woke up to take my break through and accidently broke the 40 mg. and took that.  Now what's going to happen?  I'm scared to death.

I always take my medication appropriately.  This is the first time I've messed up.  (My pain doc won't be in until Tuesday.)  What should I expect in doing this?  I have a high tolerance.  Before they switched me to the oxycontin the other day I was taking 45 mg. oxycodone every 3 to 4 hours.

Someone please help here!  Thanks.

And I didn't chew it, I cut it and swallowed it.  Will it still just time relase but at half the dose, or will it all be absorbed at once?  Since it's 40 mg. and I normally took 45 mg. of oxycodone, will I be okay?

relax ! you will be ok, you are right it is only 20 mg. and you didn't even chew it , with your tolerance you probably will hardly feel it. believe me i have chewed 40's & snorted them , so i know how they effect most, although if you have underlying health issues like heart problems, etc. you should go to er.

Hi. Don't get yourself all worried, you will be fine. Since you did not chew it it shouldn't hit all at once, maybe just quicker but won't last as long. The pill separator is a good idea.
Take care           karl

And since I swallowed it and didn't chew it, I figure it will take about 40 minutes to kick in, just like my regular dose?  (And since I halfed it, it's like taking 20 mg., right?)

Maybe I'm not clear.  What I'm trying to get at is since I'm used to taking 45 mg. oxycodone every 3 to 4 hours, that by taking a 1/2 of a 40 mg. oxycontin, I'm not going to get high or anything.  Same med, right?

I am going out today and buying a pill holder and setting everything up so there will be no more confusion.  I just don't want to find myself taking more than I'm supposed to or making myself out of it.

Maybe I'm getting anxious for no reason.  I hate medication and I hate worrying about the side effects of it.  Sorry to be such a pain.   I just want to make sure I'll be okay.  I hear so much about overdoses (though I'm figuring there's no way I could overdose on a 1/2 of a 40 mg. oxycontin based on my tolerance from everything I've been on up to now.)

I'm home alone and my imagination is running away with me :)

But since I only took a half, I'm only absorbing 20 mg., right?  And since I was taking 45 mg. I should be okay?

I'm not tapering.  They've changed my meds.  There are too many medications around here and I need to get one of those pill cases to keep track of things.  They add and subtract on a whim.

I was doing 45 mg. oxycodone every 3 to 4 hours plus lorazapam plus ibuprofen and cymbalta and clonidine.

THen they changed to oxycontin 40 mg. 3 times a day plus the others (minus the 45 mg. oxycodone.)  I have the option of taking 5, 10, 15, or 30 mg. of oxycodone for breakthrough pain.  I thought I was breaking the 30 mg. oxycodone (as I'm out of the 15 mg.) for pain.  This can get very confusing.

Thanks for your help.

It will absorb all at once.  You should be ok, but be very careful from now on!  That is a lot of meds to take.  Are you tapering at this time?

: )  Hope you are feeling ok!
