Medications for alcoholism

I have been prescribed Topamax upon leaving a alcohol and drug rehab center along w an antidepressant . I am aware of the fact that it is a mood stabilizer however I was told that it helps with cravings for alcohol also . Is this true? Is this a drug that can help alcoholics with their cravings ?

I was on Vivitrol. It is a monthly injection or can implanted under your skin. It also comes in pill form called Naltrexone. It knocks out cravings for alcohol and narcotics. It worked good for me with the narcotics. If you would drink on it you would not get sick but you would not get the effects of the alcohol. The down fall to it is if you don't have ins it is $1,000 a month for the shot where I live anyways. The pills are a lot cheaper. I don't know if you would be interested in it but just wanted to pass on the info to you. Good luck

I am familar with topramx.  I guess by stabilizing your mood, it does indirectly help with cravings, but not directly
There are medications like Anatabuse, where you get sick if you drink, or narcan based drugs that block the effect of narcotics, but all in all we just have to be strong

Exercise also helps energy levels and pumps out endorphins we need so badly while the brain heals
