How to taper off of Vics

I have been taking Vicodin 500 for about 4 years now.  I started out just taking maybe 1 a day and that went on for over one year. Anyway it gradually increased.  I now usually take about 4 -6. Never took more than 6 a day.  I really did start for pain.I really do want to just get off of these things because some days I just feel like ****.  I thought tapering might work better but don't know how or even if I should. I might just need to go cold turkey.  I tried a couple of weeks ago and the first thing I noticed while not taking them was I was so tired I couldn't even stay awake. If anybody knows of something you can take while getting off of these and which way would be beter just please let me know.I do take Xanax for my anxiety disorder but by no means abuse it.  I don't even have to use it half the time while being on these. My biggest fear is the emotional state I will be in but I know I have to get off of these. I will take any suggestions anyone may have.  FYI   I am in AA right now also and next month will be 6 months.

If you do want to taper, I'd search it but I was taking more than you and went cold turkey.  I began to taper and felt so bad I just went for it.  Why drag it on...  But everyone is different...

Congrats on 6 months in aa....  You should know a ton about this stuff if your really working your program and just because you have a script doesn't mean your not addicted or abusing, you've become dependent.  Opiates like vicodin are crazy on your system.  I'd recommend looking at the thomas recipe and amino acid protocol which I really like.  EVeryone is different so find what works for you but quit now!  Every pill you take makes the withdrawals so much harder especially when you under 6 a day...  You can go cold turkey, it'll hurt but you'll be clear headed before you know it and then you'll see how even those amounts can cloud your life.  Good luck!
