Nyquil Abuse

My question is why do youth use nyquil to get high, or change their stste of consciousness?
What are the dangers of abusing nyquil?
Why do kids engage in this practice?
What could be their mottives?
How might a parent approach their kids to discourage this?

I have heard of people abusing it to sleep, but guess folks use it to get high as well...dunno?  kids will sniff gas as well..so there is no telling why a child would use nyquil for a buzz.  If it were my child, or if it were me, i would keep a close eye on it

Thats a real hard call on your questions. They do things today that boggle my mind as when I was a teen, I got into a few things, but never anything like what we see today..Huffing gasoline, glue sniffing, this fake pot in stores, cough syrups..and now hearing something about some over the counter "bath salts" that apparently is marketed solely for abuse and not for what the name represents which on the subject of the k-2 fake pot or these bath salts have resulted in a rise of ER visit events..This morning I was reading about one boy that got so screwed up on one of these new synthetic formula's that he freaked, went home, and took his life with a shotgun..Thats Scary...

I have four teens, two boys, two girls and guess I am lucky from a standpoint that I have not seen any major problems develop so far. I guess I have to attribute this to a very open approach I took with my children as they got "educated" in school about drugs etc..It actually forced my hand on this to reveal some of my past and things that I abused along with describing the consequences that became evident due to my experimentation at the time...Primarily it was a book that was sent home describing all these drugs, with pictures included which flat out blew my mind..I fully understood the intent of this, but exposing or providing this type of information to 4th thru 6th graders I was not comfortable with at all..It was like " if you see this, don't do it"...Well, in my view it was "if they didn't know what to look for, chances are abusing it would never come to mind. In some cases, actually police officers lit joints in a classroom for the children to smell...As a parent, I felt that was way way over the top..

Its really hard to say but I imagine its peer pressure to a large degree..One example being these drinking games that we hear about ..Beer pong?? Something like that along with who knows what they are dreaming up as to how to spend their offtime from school or home responsibilities...Getting high in any fashion available seems to be at the core of many gatherings nowadays with alcohol being first on the list followed by "have you ever tried this? " type influence eminating out of these gatherings or parties..

Your questions are hard to answer..When I grew up, hard discipline was a consequence of my bad decisions..In today's youth, that seems to backfire and create more rebellious thinking verse's getting the message across.

My approach now vs's the way things were dealt with back in the day is being proactive about what I know of what trends are out there and have a very open relationship with my children about them... For them to feel comfortable to speak to me about anything that might trouble them..Part of my success (up to this point) may be due to the fact I have been their sole parent since they were 1,2,4, and 7..They are now 13,14,16,and 19...So my situation is a little unique compared to most households.....Its a very real and difficult issue to address for many these days.
