Pregnancy and Subutex

I have been on Suboxone then Subutex for more than five years. I've never really tried seriously to go off it, because even after a day, the withdrawal is too horrendous.. Also, I don't really mind being on it--as it's true what everyone says that it does give you a mild euphoria and extra energy. However, I now want to try to get pregnant. My Sub doctor says he has had two people stay on it, and their babies have been healthy... but I'm not willing to take that risk and wouldn't be able to live with myself if something did go wrong, or it predisposed my child to opiate addiction (a possibility anyway, given both myself and husband are addicts). Any thoughts on whether you need to be completely off before trying to conceive? I've also heard that if you do conceive while on it, going through withdrawal can be harmful for the unborn baby. So should I be off completely before even trying to conceive?? Any experiences or info would be appreciated!

Hello to u guys, I am 36 weeks prego and 2 years clean after 15 years of pill uses, and my pregnancy has been completly norm. I'm not going to say they didn't worn me that my baby may go through some wothdraw but not likely seen on subutex more so on methadone. I hope this helps you. Any more ? just ask i'm here!

Hey I just found out i was 9 weeks pregnant.. I have been on suboxone since february 2010.... my psych switched me 2 subutex cuz its apparently safer since it has less chemicals... no opiate blocker which I'm sure you know all about!  so yeah the psych basically said i need 2 stay on it thru the whole pregnancy because my baby has already been exposed to it.. now i got my bf asking me if the baby willl be addicted when it comes out? I don't know.. i have so many questions for the doctor. I am only down to 2 mg a day... starting off with 12mg back in feb.. I want to be off of it already subutex tastes so bad lol. I would say for your sake if you want a baby to get off of it before concieving. I am already stresssing hard about it knowing i could make my baby suffer.

Hi!  You have some very valid concerns.  Make an appt. with an OB and have a long discussion about this.  The optimum is always to be drug free prior to and during pregnancy.   And,yes,withdrawals are very harmful to a developing fetus.

As an aside, five years is a long time to be on Sub.  Can you ask them to begin tapering you off?
