7 weeks pregnant and tapering sub

I am 7 weeks along and have managed to taper to 2 mgs. Trying to get to zero in the next two weeks. Although I have the blessing of my doctor to get off I have encountered people saying that I'm wrong to taper, wds can cause m/c and yes I know there's a risk but tapering down as far as I can go I think everything will be ok.

It's having well meaning people basically trying to scare me out of it that's bothering me. If there's anyone out there who tapered off while pregnant I'd love to hear from you. Im trying to do the right thing here yet encounter criticism for it. It really *****.

I am a grandma and i dont believe babies should ever be put down!!!!  They are a gift given to us for making it thru raising our own children.  Our job as a grandparent is to hold them, hug them and kiss them over and over!  My 10 yr old grandson isnt so sure about this anymore but my 11 month old granddaughter is all about it!!!

Sarah thank you so much for your post. It made me feel really good. And yes, the docs are working together to make sure I do this safely. The idea is to basically taper in a way that while relatively quick not so quick as to get really sick. I'm going to let my body be the guide and adjust accordingly depending on what my doc says. I REALLY want to be off within two weeks but that really depends on how my copes. I'm going to try and hunt down those women who successfully tapered off sub while pregnant. I'd love to hear thier experience with it.

Tryingtocope: Lol ain't it the truth. I am anti-CIO yet had relatives tell me I was spoiling my WEEK old baby because when he'd cry I'd pick him up. I'm like, he's a week old for heavens sake! He needs mommy. Yet they figured I was spoiling him. Yes your so right, someone will always have something to say. I should have learned a long time ago not to let people's comments affect me.

I guess being hormonal, in slight wds has made me especially sensitive to stupid remarks. I'm just so grateful to have this forum for support. I know the next two weeks will be a challenge but after all is said and done the end result will be SO worth it!! Thank you so much!! I feel much better now about my decision to taper.

Vicky, I already did lol. Actually the one that was really pushy about staying on I simply asked her how long she had been a doctor lol. She of course is no doctor but went on to cite various examples on the Internet that says not to taper while pg. Lol, ok yeah sure. Just so happens that the examples she cited were from a sub doctor lol, yeah no bias there..

Sara is right when she said everyone wants to put their two-cents in on preg women! That extends to EVERYTHING pregnant, not just addiction! Get used to it! Someones always gonna have SOMETHING to say, breast vs. bottle, crib vs. co-sleeping, circumcision or no...... And it will continue after your little one arrives. I had a woman once tell me what a HORRIBLE mother I was for piercing my daughters ears!!!! Just learn to smile and nod, and let it go in one ear and out the other! If your doctor says its fine, I'd listen to him. He's the one with the fancy degree, making the big bucks!

Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy! You are very blessed!

I am really impressed with both your doctors actually.  I think your sub doc put you in contact with a wonderful OB who deals with opiates and they are working together with you and the baby's best interest here.  I also am very proud of you for taking charge of your life here.  Most moms that come here are very alone and scared and their doctors dont know anything about what they are taking.  I hope you are feeling better about this now~~

Your right Sarah, I had my SIL tell me never to lift my arms up over my head for that reason. I really had to try and keep a straight face while she described the horrors that could befall me if I did that. Yes, people do need to think before they speak but often they don't.

I'm waiting for a call back from the OB. My sub doc had referred me to an OB who specializes in opiate addiction but because I live far away she said she would just give instructions to my sub doc on how to taper me. I decided I want to see her to help alleviate some of my fears and should hear back soon from her. But both she and my sub doc are ok with the taper so yes, your right that's all I need to listen to. Thanks!!

Just tell them all to take a hike!!  I mean it.  There's a huge difference between tapering down and going through full on attack of withdrawal!!!  Pisses me off, too!!

You are just fine and the doctor happens to be right!

Yes, I think one was Melanie and then there's a "Christine??"...Chris was on Methadone and tapering for awhile. She did not have a doctor for that!!  We begged her to suck it up and tell her doctor and everything was fine! She had her baby last week! Perfection!

Block those emails!!  xo

Everybody loves to get their 2 cents in when it comes to a pregnant woman it seems.  People like that need to mind their own damn business!  I remember almost 30 yrs ago when i was expecting my first baby, one lady told me to never go bowling as the cord would wrap around the babies neck from me lifting my arms up!!

Thanks Vicky, nobody here. On another site. Yet on that same site a girl there jumped from 2 mgs and is doing great. Yet these people PM me saying how dangerous going into wd is, I shouldn't go off it. Pisses me off because I made it pretty clear my doc was ok with it. Yet they still felt the need to try and scare me away from tapering. Thanks for the link/names. I'm going to check it out. You guys are awesome and it's good to know I'll have solid support in the days ahead. :) thank you!!!

Emotions run pretty high anyways when you are pg so i understand how things like this stick in your mind.  There are a couple other girls i am going to chase down too who have had successful tapers and babies.

Vicki....Melanie was another one too right?

Thank you Sarah, I know I shouldnt listen to these people but their words stick in my head.

If an obstetrician who specializes in addiction gives me her blessing then that's I'll I should worry about. At 2 mgs I feel so so. Not horrible but just anxiety and a bit of rls at night.

I just want to be off this so I can finally relax a little. I'm trying not to overthink this, just get it done. I wish I could find more women who've tapered pregnant though. That would be good reassurance.

Hey!  Were you given criticism here on this forum???

There have been a number of women who have come through the forum pregnant and on Suboxone. They were put on the drug by their doctors. They tapered. Their babies were just fine.  I'll try to remember some names for you...

Be careful where you get your information. Even here!  Your doctor has your best interest in mind!  When is your next appt.??

Please try and not listen to those who are saying those things.  Your doctor is the one to listen to.  Tapering down is the safest way for both you and the baby.  There is a girl in the pain management forum who has some really good info about meds during pregnancy.  Let me go and get her link and i will post it back to you.......sara

I'm really happy about the pregnancy but I'm scared too. I'm in Canada and subutex isn't available. So I'm stuck tapering with suboxone and I'm afraid of something happening to the baby because of the naloxone in sub.

I was given two choices, switch to methadone and stay on it for the pregnancy or taper sub. I decided to go with the taper. In a few days I'll drop to 1 and see how that goes. I want to taper down as far as I can go and then jump hopefully minimizing wds. I can't wait to get this over with. Every day on sub I have a dark cloud over me and worry so much about the effects of sub on my developing baby. Praying hard he or she will be ok.
