Too much antibiotics

My step daughter's mother has put her on 3 different antibiotics in the past 4 months. She's 6 years old and the minute she has a fever her mother asks her boyfriend (who is a doctor) to write a prescription for antibiotics.
Is this safe? And is there any way to contact any health professional about what is going on? Her primary family doctor doesn't even know this is going on. And even if the primary did, isn't there a code of silence for doctors?

Thanks everyone! My boyfriend is trying to figure out how to deal with this situation.. He is making an appointment with his daughter's primary care physician to have a little discussion. As for the mother, she keeps saying there is nothing wrong with giving them to her, it's fine, it's fine.. We've already sent her articles showing that it's not. I think it's easier for her to do a "quick fix" instead of taking care of her daughter..

Hi Kris!  I agree with the others. That's a lot of antibiotic in a short period of time. The problem is,of course, her mother and THEN the boyfriend. It's not illegal for him to write or call in meds for the child but he should know better!!  It's just not healthy AND fevers can be a GOOD thing!  Plus,it's just poor practice.

I have very strong opinions about this sort of thing. A sick child tends to be inconvenient for some parents and that pisses me off!!   That's the big push for a med!  The child should be seen by her doctor if she's sick. Period.

The child's doctor should know and you do have some rights there as a step mom and most definitely her Dad has every right to speak to the child's Mother and tell her and her boyfriend to knock it off! Someone just needs to put their foot down and be an adult here.

Best of luck...you're in a tough spot but you need to advocate for that little girl!

I had also read about people getting a condition called c-diff from too many antibiotics. This has something to do with killing all of the good bacteria in the digestive system.

I know as a mother, its difficult to watch my child be sick. I've brought him in so many times just to be sent away with nothing, that I only take him in if he's lethargic or his fever is really high. Taking antibiotics when you don't need them is very dangerous. Especially for a child. You should try telling her that if he keeps taking antibiotics when there is no need, one day he will get sick and nothing will help. He could get a super bug that can't be cured because of all that antibiotic use. That's in layman's terms of course but most people won't listen to the medical jargon.

The problem you have is she may not listen no matter what you tell her. It's in our culture today that everyone wants an easy fix for everything. Including their children. What they don't realize is that they are actually harming their long term health.

I think there is a law against doctors writing prescriptions for non patients. I'm not sure if it's just narcotics or not though. You can look into the law by googling it. Try googling stuff about long term harm that overuse of antibiotics can cause, print it out and hand it too her. It may be all you can do.

Hey kris, i am a nurse, her mothers boyfriend should NOT be writing her scripts for antibiotics full stop.  Just because she has a fever does not mean she needs antibiotics.  The child needs to be seen by her primary doctor and examined before a decision to start these tablets is made.

Can u talk to her mother, try to find out exactly why she is needing so many courses in such a short period of time?  What about your partner?
