I've read a lot on here about Tramadol. Like LongerDays said, my experience was very different. I never experienced any type of addiction to it, nor did it help much with my pain. Many docs will offer to prescribe Tramadol/Ultracet because you cannot abuse it due to it being a partial antagonist/agonist. Unlike Vicodin or any other opiate, which are all full-agonists, the antagonist property of it means that if you take more than you are supposed to it acts in reverse. An agonist binds strongly to your receptors and gives you pain relief. Euphoria is a side effect. An antagonist (like Narcan, which they give to people who are OD'ing on opiates) throws the opiates off of the receptors and puts you into withdrawal and blocks the binding of opiates to the receptors. Ultracet is tramadol and tylenol. Tramadol is addictive, though, in that it can actually give you seizures if you suddenly stop taking it. Everyone reacts differently to medication, but I've never heard of anyone being signifigantly eased of pain by an Ultracet. Best of luck with the PT! That's probably your best shot. Pain management is pretty advanced too, where they can give you an injection that completely numbs the nerve and stops the pain without any opiate or other addictive medication.

Very enlightening. Your information puts a whole new spin on dependence. Thanks.

Because of its opiate receptor agonist qualities, physical dependence & significant withdrawal is common with tramadol even for those who don't experience any high or addiction.  Tramadol also includes an antidepressant which seems to make withdrawal more prolonged & uncomfortable than straight opiates.
I never craved or enjoyed tramadol but ended up taking it way too long because the withdrawals were so bad.   If you read Emily Post's journal you will see that there are many who regret starting tramadol, your experience may be different but not getting high isn't the whole story.
It's so lame that we don't have safe effective pain management available but tramadol just isn't the answer for most.
Best wishes to you for recovery.

I done well with the pain while on suboxone it really kept pain undercontrol, soon as I went off it in march i have had nothung but pain. My wife said she would take me to the animal shelter and have me put down, LOL gosh she is good to me LOL Thanks for the info.

My experience with Ultracet is different than that reported here. I never felt a buzz from using it, so I never craved it. Clearly reactions depend on the individual. Also, the drug didn't help me noticeably with pain relief. My physician prescribed it because it does not lead as often to dependence or addiction. That said, if you're really worried that you might "like them too much" then don't take them.   It doesn't seem like it's worth the risk.

GOOD IDEA!  I wouldnt personally mess with the ultracet or trams.  The scary factor alone would prevent me.  Used them in the past, but didnt know all the dangers involved.

PT might help wonders.  What is the back issue? Herniations? Lower back?  I injured my back really badly when I was 24.  I had prior herniation L4-5 but I didnt bother me.  I started an at home pilates workout and I had no idea what I was doing and ruptured the disc, it fractured horizontally, spinal fluid leak, sitting on the nerve.. talk about shooting pain down the leg, I never ever felt pain like that in my life (and I had 38 hr labor followed by an emergency C-Section) .. in traction for weeks.. (I was arleady an addict so I was literally a kid in a candy store)... it took a long time, but I found that walking, just normal pace, slow walking (gradually over time fast walking, then jogging) has alleviated any and all back pain I had.  Even now, if I get too lazy (which happens a lot on the weekends cause Im tired lol) my back will start acting up.. I just kick up some exercise and it relieves it a lot.  Proper stretching is a must though.

I just came home from wally world, talked to the pharmisitist, $56 for Ultracet they said take tramadol and tylnnol, its the same thing, and you can get tram for $8 a script, And ultacet has 37.5mg of tram and tramold has 50mg, so I think I will tuff it out and see what PT dose it has helped with pain in the past. Man drug co. are tricky.

Hey Aaron... Ultracet is addictive.  Many people have gotten hooked on it.  Its Ultram/Ultracet/Tramadol I believe they are all related and whehter doctors say so or not, they are addictive and can be dangerous.  :(  sorry for the bad news.  They are also derived from the opiate family.  Be careful with them.  Ive used them during in between times when I was using -- just to hold w/drawal at bay -- so that should tell you something right there.. Plus once your on them, they must be tapered off of.  They cannot be quit cold turkey - as you risk seizures.  Search this site for Ultram/Ultracet and you will find lots of info.  Feel better friend :)
