Stopping Dilaudid

I need to stop taking the Dilaudid prescribed to me for Migraines.  I'm addicted and it scares me!

How long does the Withdrawal Symtems last and how bad are they?

I've been on Dilaudid for about 1 year and at the moment the ammount is 2 pills (8mgs) -3 times a day.

Any help or info about how a person stops taking this drug would be really really helpful to me.

I'm asking you people here instead of my doctor  because I might change my mind about not taking them.

Hi Tidy, I have a suggestion for the time being while you decide whether or not to quit. Can you just take your meds 2x a day and see if you get the same relief, then maybe lower from there? I too have been given dilaudid for migraines but only in extreme situations. It is a strong narcotic. I finally got with a neurologist and you'd be amazed at the migraine prevention (non narcotic) meds they have out there. When taken daily and after you find the right one, your episodes of headaches will significantly be lowered. Have you been to a nero? In any case, you absolutely can get off the dilaudid and we are here to help. Keep posting for more advice.

Hi & Welcome,

I never took Dilaudid per say but opiates are opiates so I do have experience with that. Everyone is different with withdrawal and it depends on many things such as your overall general health, age, length of time using and amount. You used for a bit but the amount is not that great so your withdrawal should be pretty short lived. The best thing to do is talk with your doctor and let them know--for two reasons. they may be able to help you with a plan and something to ease the process. Also you will want to cut off any supply you have so that you are not tempted to go back. Make sense, right?

When you are all set and have a plan in place we can recommend at home vitamins and such to help ease the process and also we will support you mentally here and encourage you. the mental part of all this is hard=--harder than the physical and just talking about it and sharing with people who understand will go a long way.

Lastly, do you plan in place for what you will do for the headaches? I always recommend that people have an alternative plan for existing pain. If you go through withdrawal the pain may bring you back and you don't want that so it is your best interest to talk with your doctor and listen to suggestions here.

I am glad you found your way here. Stick around. this is a great place for support.
