Co-codamol Addiction

I have been taking 8/500 co-codamol tablets since Christmas. I don't take the full daily recommended of 8 per day every day, but do take a certain amount per day (never any more than the recommended dose) when I do not take the co-codamol I start to feel very unwell and extremely agitated. My doctor said I cannot be physically addicted as I am not maxing out every day, but this does not explain why I feel so unwell when I stop taking them. I hope some one out there can help me as I feel like I'm going crazy and it's all in my mind.
