HEY....quick question!

Since Laparoscopy yesterday my pain level is through the roof. I refused pain medication bc Ive come so far and just don't wanna go through it again. My doctor KNOWS my struggle but said its okay to take them when in pain! Easy for him to say but I KNOW ME! That whole bottle would be GONE quick, fast, and in a hurry! I have legitimate pain but also have legitimate CRAVINGS... I just don't think that putting narcotics in my system right now is the best way to go... Am I wrong? Also, They did give me pain medication at the hospital thru an I.V. does this start my clean time back to day one?

First, to clarify, did you have a diagnostic laparoscopy, or did you have laparoscopic surgery?  There can be a significant difference between the two.  The first shouldn't be causing such severe pain.

Often times, a good deal of the pain results from the amount of air they use during the procedure.  That can cause some pretty wicked gas pains (even into your shoulders, back, etc).  The best thing for that is to move around as much as you can (nothing exerting, just stay moving when you can).  The air will reabsorb and any pain related to that will subside in about 2-3 days tops.  Incisional pain also doesn't stay bad for too long with this kind of thing.  Have you tried any OTC meds yet?  What did the doc recommend OTC wise?  Definitely keep in touch with your doctor, he may be able to give you some non-narcotic options to take in addition to OTC analgesics.

No doubt pain needs managed, and if you're consistently experiencing pain at a level "10" that isn't responding to any other analgesics, you may need to consider taking a minimal amount of the Percocet for couple days.  If you end up needing to take them, PLEASE be ultra careful, have someone hold them for you and give them to you when needed, and again, stick to the bare minimum you need to be comfortable.  You've been having a lot of cravings, so you would just have to be so cautious.  The good news is, the pain resulting from something like this is typically pretty short lived and will start to improve pretty rapidly.

No, the pain meds you received in the hospital do not constitute a relapse or necessitate a reset of your clean time, not at all.  They were meds given for legit pain in a medically supervised fashion.

Million dollar question...you said you refused the pain med, but does your doctor actually know about your addiction history?  If not, please consider telling him, it's so important and will help you be accountable to yourself by putting up roadblocks.

I hope you feel better soon!!!

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time with the pain. I am proud of you for refusing the meds and being honest with your doctor. You have to remember that you are still very early in your recovery and those pain receptors are still freaking out. I'm sure that you are having a lot more pain than you would if you had say 3 or even 6 months clean. Hang in there and know that this is temporary. You can and will get through this. Get well soon!

Hey honey!! Well I was two weeks clean and had a kidney stone requiring surgery. Insane pain. I took toradol ( nonnarctic) that really helped. I did have iv medication as well but I didnt start my clean time over. As it was necessary and under a dr advice, so wasn't abusing. Post op I did have a script for lortab. I have the bottle to my mom. I took 2 for post op pain. It wasn't abiding either, I took as prescribed and took one 4 hrs post op and one 4 hrs later. Then I had my mom flush the remainder. So all of the meds were taken as prescribed. It did not set me back, I had no withdrawls and was able to pick up where I left off :) if you have someone that could do that and you would flush then that is an option. Also you could try toradol.

I had laparoscopic surgery many years ago and do remember it being a short down time and was not prescribed any narcotic pain meds after the surgery of course everyone is different but you sound like you will make it just fine.

Don't have the medical answers as such - but why did you need laparoscopic surgery?...

I had a gastric bypass done 4 years ago and they stressed the importance of taking the pain meds they gave me for the full time even if I didn't need it - it is important here to stress that it wasn't narcotics I was given but merely ordinary over the counter paracetamol. Their argument was that the body needed to be not stressed in order to heal physically but if the pain was more severe than paracetamol could handle then I needed to be checked out.. first day was not pleasant but I didn't feel anything was wrong and the next day was better and so on...

Subjectively I say that your clean time is your clean time as long as you dont use - I.V. because of operation is hard to avoid even after several years of clean time so I wouldn't consider it back to square one - however I don't know if that is the reality of the wd's

Hope some of the above made sense
