Hi~ Yes,it's not safe to stop Fioricet cold turkey. You need to contact your doctor and just be honest about this. He/she can help you by giving you a good taper plan or covering you with a benzo. I agree with everything Mayberry said: you need to taper slowly over time to beat this.
When you begin tapering, it's best to put someone else in charge of the Fioricet. You may be very tempted to take more if you don't.
Please call the doctor today and let us know how you're doing. We can give you a lot of support during the process. You can be rid of this but you'll need to work at it!!
Post back or send me a message if there's anything I can help you with. I've essentially been off this drug for 10 months and I've not felt this good in a long, long time.
Vicki
thanks all. as of today, i have none left. i may be able to get my refill in the am, although it was just filled last week. i believe i am taking about 20 per day. i have another one coming through the mail - possibly on wed. i am terrified of a seizure so i guess i should call the doc who gave me the prescription and explain this to him just in case the pharmacy won't fill the prescription so soon. every time i have come off pills (as i do binge a few times a year i am afraid of the backlash possibilities) my biggest fear is always the cold turkey effect.

thats a very difficult question to answer...unfortunately no one here can answer it for you, but that doesn't mean we can't offer certain types of advice. how many are you taking every day and how long have you been on them? most importantly, are you going to run out?
there are various factors to consider with barbiturates. one is the dose, the second is how long you've been on it. the half-life of butalbital is important in understanding just how much of the drug is really in your system. the half life can be anywhere from 34 hours to 100 hours meaning takin daily it builds up to higher levels that just your daily dose.
in any event, at the height of my addiction, i wasn't taking a solid number of them every day. some days it would be 20...some days (if i was lucky) it would be 5 to 10. withdrawal effects for me only began when the dose was severely cut or discontinued completely....and they were HORRIBLE....which is why slow and steady wins the race with this drug. luckily i never experienced a seizure during the times i went cold turkey......and the only time i went cold turkey was when i ran out and couldn't get more. the risk of seizure is very high though so ultimately you SHOULDN'T vary your dose until your doctor has put you on a taper plan.
for you, if you were to reduce your average daily dose by, say, 20%....you may experience severe withdrawal while i may not. its these individual differences that make it very important to only do this with a doctor.
