PAWS = Post Acute Withdrawal Symptoms and this is a serious condition that everyone who is stopping meds after prolonged use needs to be aware of. Most will say quitting is easy but staying clean & sober is the hard part....how true. Depression, lack of energy, insomnia, etc can last from 6 months - 2 years depending on the person. That's why most people will seek out an aftercare program, NA, AA, this forum, family, counseling, etc to ensure they stay off the meds.
There is some excellent info about PAWS in the Health Pages on this site...just do a search and read up on the condition. Better to have knowledge about what will happen versus going into something blind...
Good Luck

Please can u explain to me what PAWS are? Im portuguese i dont know the meaning of it?
His doctor wants to give him a antagonist tomorrow? I dont know if that is a good idea, because he still on withdrawl, and after the detox he want to be free of drugs!
Do u think the doctor wants to give him a antagonist to end up with the pain, the withdrawl?
thank u all for your friendly words,
Im afraid of giving him to much clonidine because it lows the blood pressure a lot!Do u think giving him 3 pills a day its enough?
Other important issue ,do u think after 7 days without heroin, just tramadol but always tappering, the withdraws are going to be very bad?
when is he going to start to feel little better?after how many days? Do u believe the worst days have already gone?
Good morning.. sorry to hear of your BF still feeling the wd.. he has gone 7 days and this is wonderful please pass on a congratulations.. I wish we could taper off another med and skip the whole wd process. but this is not possible.. have BF take very hot baths/showers this will help tremendously. Clonidine is used to help with the shakes associated with wd and adds a calming effect that many say help with sleep.. I hope BF sticks this out as it will not last as long nor should be as intense as if he jumped off the smack.. I do not think he is feeling the wd from the tram.. as florida guy said 7 to 10 days.. wishing you both the best.. hang in there check out the thomas recipe as suggested.. and your engish is marvelous :) Be kind to each other and BF no going back now.. wishing you both the best possible life.. lesa
i don't think tramadol is an effective med for heroin withdrawal. i have also heard that tram withdrawals are also rough. he would be better off using the thomas recipe located at bottom right of this page.
i have detoxed from heroin several times in my life. i wish i had the recipe at those times. clonodine will help. there are no miracle cures. misery is just temporary though. please feel free to IM me if you want. i will help in any way i can. best of luck to you both. sway
I don't think a tram addiction can occur in 7 days...could be wrong though. In my experience, I would believe that your bf's heroin use and subsequent wd was temporarily abated by using the trams but the wds are not over. I have no experience with clonidine but the help pages can point you to the Thomas Recipe & the Amino Acid protocols. Both of these helped many on this site.
Regardless, most physical wds end within 7-10 days. PAWS is something to be aware of and can last anywhere from 6 months - 2 years.
