hydro abuse

Hello all.

i have been taking hydro for 3 years now for neck pain - i ran out 8 days ago. The first couple days were hard, and though i feel ok now - i feeling like something is missing and that the hydro can give me. I am able to pick up my prescription in another week - should i pick it up or just let it go? my neck hurts pretty bad, and since iv been off of it, hurts but manageable without the meds, though i think im hungrier than ever. Any advice?

It is very normal to have sleep problems when coming off pills. I know my sleep did not really return until about 30 days clean. I couldn't fall to sleep and then once I did I would keep waking up every couple of hours and have a hard time laying still to get back to sleep. That darn RLS was killer for me. Don't force sleep it will return when its ready. Its all a part of the process. Wait it out it will be worth it.

You mention "control yourself". Don't try to do this alone! You're not alone. We've all been through it. Stay on here. Get support anywhere you can. Being alone and trying addiction control isn't how any of us succeeded. We found that getting others with the same problem helps us much better with our problem than solving it with our own thinking. In early recovery we suffer from a broken thinker. All our thinker wants is more dope, because that's what it's been fed for a long, long time. So, we must borrow other addicted people's thinkers until ours gets better.

Don't hope, you've quit all ready!!! Now it's just a matter of keeping that willingness to not use that you have, just rolling along smoothly and sweetly. Keep posting, keep asking questions, use us, that's what we're here for. We've found that helping you helps us. Keep on keeping on and just don't use one day at a time. It's just a matter of getting to bed tonight clean, just for today. Don't think about the future. Just stay in today. Your miracle is just around the next corner.

HI and thank you - i know see that it really hasnt helped my pain but it does has improved my quality of life - maybe is all mental - when i take it, I know that im going to have an okey day because of it. Its been 8 days since ive taken it and my pain is tolerable but as mentioned in another threat i am really really hungry and feel as though something is missing, but nothing i cant control or tolerate. Im taking it day by day and seeing how it affects my day to day, my life, and go from there. I hope that i am able to control myself and quit.

Thank you again

I agree with all of the above. Give your neck some time. See what your pain level finally settles down to. I was using hydro for my back. I quickly found out that the Hydro wasn't really doing much for the pain at all. It had quit working long before I quit. I had become addicted and had no choice but to keep using until I finally got the willingness to do what it took to stop. I ran out early and thats when i decided to stop. It sounds like that's what happening to you.
You have a good head start on getting your life back. Keep it going!!

I suggest you also talk to your prescriber about this.  When I found I could tolerate my back pain, and that it was slowly getting better and better, I told my Dr. I had become addicted, the hydro was making me miserable and I don't want it anymore unless its a matter of quality of life. I felt that if I had that "opening" where I could re-up if I wanted, sooner or later I would. I had previously been clean for 9 months, and then got my script going again. Then I used for almost another 2 years. If I didn't cut my sources, tell my secrets, I'd go back out and use. It requires a commitment. Addiction is cunning and powerful.

Wish you the best recovery!

wow - thank you very much for your responses. I never thought i was an addict until recently - and you are correct, if i feel ok now, i might feel better as the time goes. In regards to my hunger.. it makes sense. I am REALLY hungry though!

Thanks a lot for your support!

Hi Ariley is right. I just put that Grieve information in my Journal..Also there is so much that these substance do to our Brain..There are a billions transmitter and they get affected bad by these meds. It takes time for the Brain to heal..So the less time you did drugs the less you will have to go through so many mental changes. So if you are done be done. Just know it is a disease and you would like to put it in remission..It takes a lot of work after the detox..This is the hard part, so I would highly recommend you get some out side support like AA/NA..I wish you the best.
Bless

Hi there and welcome! I think you basically answered your own question. If you are handling the pain ok after 8 days, think how you will feel after one month clean. The more time that you put between you and the pills, the better your pain will get. As far as feeling like something is missing, that is normal. As addicts, we grieve our drug of choice when we quit. It's the same process as if someone dies. We also are bombarded by emotions that we have numbed. The brain chemistry takes time to heal. Try to be patient and see this through. And please cancel that script and talk to your dr and pharmacy about not wanting opiates! It is so important. I can almost guarantee you will pick them up and use them if you don't cancel the script. We are here for you and will support you in any way that we can. Please hang in there. Take care and keep us updated ok?
