methasdone withdrawl

my friends has been on gabapentin and methadone for about a year for pain from cancer surgery.she is in the process of getting off gaba. detoxing slowly she was on 3600mg/day. she wants to get off the methadone also she takes 5mg morning 5mg at night how is the best way to get off the methadone.thanking you in advance

I agree with gnarly.  I'm currently tapering off of methadone and doing it slowly.  I'm only going down 5 mgs per week and after only going down for about 5 weeks, it started to really hit me.  I've stopped where I'm at and staying at that dose for about another week to get my body adjusted and then try again.  It will not be fun but she is on such a low dose, I really don't see any problems with her coming off.  Please let us know how everything goes...a lot of people on here care.

hi and welcome to the forum...the best way to get off methadone is sloooowly. the best
thing your freind has going for her is the low dose she is on...methadone detoxing all
depends on how long your on it ...and what your dose is ...the taper i recommend and
worked for me was 10% drop every 72hr its doable but does come with some discomfort
if she is on pills get a pill cutter and break them into 1/4s and start by going off 1/4 at a time if you can break the 1/4s in half it would be better but it's kinda like splitting hairs
so do the best you can and when she starts feeling the withdrawals let a few more days
go by and when you get to 5mg try to go 1mg a week  this may seam slow but methadone is a powerful drug  good luck to both of you and keep posting...there is alot of people here that can help....Gnarly
