natural sleep aids

my question is.....does anyone have any experience with 5htp??  i read online that there hasn't been that much study about it and it can be unsafe.....i called a pharmacist and he said he would suggest Melatonin over it.....anyone have any experience with either??   i was also told that melatonin gives you nightmares....lol  geez  at my wits end here.
