You're not alone, I'm about in the same boat you are...2 years ago I detoxed with suboxone and then I started abusing that...I stopped cold turkey and it was horrible.
I have a herniated disk now and the doctors have been feeding me pills for over 6 months.  I did also have a steroid injection, so it did help some with the pain but I'm still craving the pills.  I've been off for 3 days now, I keep "falling off the wagon"...tonight  I called a substance abuse treatment center, they told me I have to call back in the morning.  I hope they can help me but I'm scared to death.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

The amount of time it takes varies with everyone.  Generally 5-7 days the physical pain is gone.  The diarrhea, restless legs, and upset stomach could last longer but here is the main thing.

If you look at addiction, whether you are put on it by a doctor or not, as like being an alcoholic it may make more since to you.  Once you have started taking the medicine even if you don't "drink" or "use" for a month or a year or even years, the addiction will kick back in and likely be stronger.

I know you may not have chosen this and you may feel like blaming the accident or perhaps even the doctors who put you on it.  The longer you brood over it you may even blame yourself.  It is nobody's fault.  There are a lot of recreational opiate users out there and may spend a lot of time without being addicted to them but let physical or emotional trauma enter their lives and suddenly there it is like a thief in the night.

You may want to talk to a doctor and tell them what is going on.  Just don't forget don't blame anybody for the addiction or if you want to call it a dependency that is alright too.  Also remember you are not alone and keep posting on here.
