I am 34 weeks pregnant with my THIRD Methadone child. I am no way an expert but this is my 3rd !! I live in New York State and here it is a law that they have to maintain you on Methadone when you are pregnant, also they can't decrease you it can lead to miscarriage or pre term labor. My first child on Methadone I used until I was 5 months and she went thru hell when she was born. She was in NICU for 7 weeks and she kicked at home for another 6 months... it was HORRIBLE !! My second baby and this child too, I was (and still am) clean my entire pregnancy !! She was in the NICU for 38 days she had withdrawl symptoms for another 6 months as well. Her symptoms were not as bad as my other child that I used with, but she still withdrawled. I can honestly say that having a child on methadone is better than having a child addicted to the amount of Heroin I used a day. My advice to is to stay on Methadone during your pregnancy and try to stay as low as you can and as soon as you are physically and emotionally able to start a slow 10mg a month detox. Some people are totally against having a baby on Methadonem, but when God blesses you with a child and you are clean and doing the right thing with your life I say GO FOR IT just make sure you have a support system because you are going to need one, especially the first few weeks after you have the baby. I myself personally went thru alot of guilt and shame for having a baby on methadone and watching her withdrawal was very difficult so please GET YOURSELF A SUPPORT GROUP IMMEDIATELY !! Good Luck and God Bless

Hey I was a nurse in pediatrics for 3.5 years and there were so many babies that had to be placed on methadone.......You do need to talk with your ob...more than likely they will recommend you stay on it for a little while but the outcome will prob be that the baby will be born addicted to the methadone and will also have to be tapered down on it also. this is very common these days.....but at least you are only 8 weeks along i suggest you call the doctor who is prescribing it and also your ob ASAP!! and let them know whatever is best for the baby is what you would like to do....if you do not mind me asking how long have u been on methadone and why u are on it? do not stress out to much about it as thiese days it is a common drug.....for some reason I am thinking doctors like to use suboxne during pregnancy before methadone but the babies are almost always kept in nicu for a while to be tapered off the methadone......and you will have risks with your pregnancy such as pre-term birth and low birth weight and resp. problems at birth and etc. anyone who is taking medications during pregnancy that are narcotics have these concerns.

You have to talk with your OB about this.  Tapering is the only way to go when you are pg.  You dont want to just stop.   We have had other girls who have been on methadone that have delivered healthy babies.          sara
