psychosis or drug abuse

My son is 20, and has recently been treated with drugs for psychosis and depression (zyprexa and pristiq). He tells me that he has had drugs before but isn't addicted to them, and his psychosis and anxiety had nothing to do with drugs. The other night he was up pacing the floor and checking doors, saying that he was hearing things, and he told me it was because he hadn't taken medication, but the other day I found an empty insulin syringe packet in his shorts when I was washing them, do you think that he has been lying to me and doctors, and that his psychosis is part of his drug problem. I am worried that he is taking all this medication and if he is taking drugs, what would that do to his body.  Suejayne

Good Morning Suejayne and welcome to the forum.. Defiantly have him checked over by a Dr. but you may also consider speaking to him about what drugs he has used. speed/crank;coke can cause this type of behavior. while doing speed you do not feel as if you are addicted as you do not go through a wd as in opiates but you do have mental craving.. speed will keep one awake and pacing and also cause hallucinations if taken enough. Look for behavior changes like lack of apposite weight loss talking a lot enlarged pupils and paranoia.. I wish you and your son the very best.. lesa

Well, the syringe doesn't belong in his shorts...unless he's diabetic.  Get him to go for a complete blood work up with a tox screen. You need to know what you're dealing with here. Schizophrenia? Addiction psychosis? Who knows...But a work up will give you the answers you need.

Good luck!
