suboxone vs methadone

I thought suboxone was going to be so much better than methadone.  But the more I read, the more it sounds like suboxone is exactly like methadone!  Constipation, eating more, sleep disturbances, etc.  The worst part is that it sounds like it takes just as long to get off of it:  I've read where people had to cut down 1 mg. every two weeks; thats the same as methadone!  So what is the advantage????

Hi,
I am currently on m'done and it has been a life saver for me. I go to the clinic and am on 60mgs/day. However, I dont know how in the world that I am going to get off this stuff. I went 6 days w/o dosing and felt Ok until day 5 and then I felt like I had been run over by a truck. But the one thing that I do love about the m'done is I AM NEVER HUNGRY. I know that I am "different" as far as that goes because everyone else seems to eat all the time and gain tons of weight. I gained when I was taking OC's, but have lost over 20 lbs since april 08, when I started the clinic. I have often wondered about the sub, and it is offered at the clinic that I go to. All the ones that I have talked to that are on sub say that they love it, much better than m'done. Hope that helps...

i have personally been on both suboxone and methadone and I believe that they are both extremely  hard tog et off with long term use. wih shorter use suboxone is a little milder than methadone, but they honestly are both bad. I feel like methadone was a ebtter choice for me to get off opiates for good, but everyone is different and if suboxone works for you then stick with it. I was on sub for 8 months and it worked for a few but the cravigns started getting worse and worse and I eventually succumbed. I started a MMT program and feel much more prudctive and structured than being on suboxone. And now I dont have the ability to take home all my doses and either sell them or abuse them. Best of luck to everyone, peace....

Hey there!

All I can say is I would do suboxone wd, over methadone five times over!  I was taking at my highest 680mgs of methadone daily....  I managed an agonizing taper to 30 mgs and made the switch to suboxone.

I had been on methadone after 5 years, and the mental part of my addiction seemed to be over, however I was sooooo physically dependant on the m'done I couldnt get off.

I inducted on Suboxone at 16mgs daily on March 25, 2008.  Today I am now taking 1mg daily and getting ready for my next decrease.

The wd's coming off sub are not the most comfortable thing in the world, but WAY better than m'done!  I am an international Flight attendant, and I have been able to work a 18 hour flight while in the middle of full blown sub wd.  It wasnt fun, but not bad compared to what it could have been.

As far as the weight loss....  I gained a TON of weight on Methadone.  When I started sub I was 215lbs.  I am now 164lbs.

I also noticed that over the many years I was on methadone, the condition of my teeth deteriorated rapidly.  My dentist was dumfounded in between checkups at how bad they were getting and how fast it was happening.

I believe you made the right choice choosing sub.  Stabilising is different for everyone, so give it some time.  I am sure things will start evening out.

If you have any questions that I may be able to help you with feel free to message me anytime.

Best of luck,
H

Yes I was on Methadone then switched.  (Horrible experience! Sick for almost two weeks).  But now I'm fine; I'm just finding that I'm feeling like I was when I was on methadone.  I was hoping to sleep better, lose weight, etc.  Also I've read how hard it is to come off of it and I'm on the highest dose.  But my doctor told me this morning it's different for everyone so may not be as hard as I think.  I had no success coming off methadone so I had no alternative but to try this.  Thanks for the feedback!

are you currently on methadone? if you arent , DO NOT GET ON IT. Its more addicting and dangerous than heroin, ocs, you name it.
I was on meth. for 2 years at a clinic worst 2 years of my life. you have to go every morning to get your dose. if you dont make it in time, youll be extremely sick the whole day and wont sleep that night(for me it was worse than being dopesick)
I had to detox in a hospital to get of meth. and then switch over to suboxone..i had no problem tapering off sub. though...i would definately go the sub. route...i dont know what your history is, but please do notttt get on meth. if you arent already...hit me back if u want to know anything more about either of the two drugs and my experiences with them.....good luck

I can answer that one I have been on methadone 3 yrs now and I wish that at the time I started taking it there would have been the choice for me to take subutex. My very good friend is on subutex and he told me that it was way less harder to get off of than methadone. He said its a mood elevator so if you are depressed it helps with that but he hasn't had that hard of a time getting off of it when he needed to..Yes you have to wean yourself back down off either of the two drugs but the methadone i was at 120mg and now take 1/2 of that and am going to have to go to rehab to get off of it. I have tried to quit taking the methadone but my mind and body are way to addicted.. If I had it to do over again I would have deff.. gone with the subutex for sure..

Can't answer your question, since I've never been on methadone. But from what I read, suboxone is a better choice because you can use it at home, with a doctor's prescription, rather than going to a clinic every day. I've been on it since May and it certainly has taken my opioid cravings away. But, of course, I'll have to get off of this also, so it's certainly not the answer. I do believe, however, that it is an acceptable transition for addicts like myself who couldn't see any other option at the time.
