vicodin once/day

I've been taking one vicodin before a round of golf for relief of upper right-side back pain.  Otherwise, the back hurts while I play and stops after completing the round.  My question: is there any real concern about this use if limited to 20-24 days/month?

I started with around the same amount as you after surgery for endometriosis. I then started taking them for other pain from my cysts and scar tissue because it helped and I had access through my disabled husband. I liked the stress relief I felt and then started using for the high but I could stop and start. Eventually my tolerance grew and I needed more. Then I started Oxy. Before I knew it I tried to stop and became physically ill because my body was now physically defendant. Thus began a cycle of progressively escalating use and addiction. NOT worth it. I agree with the question someone posed above; do you like how you feel on them? If so, glaring red flag right there. You can try special exercises or physical therapy. If pain only when golfing, which is social sport, and not in day to day functions, I feel you can be headed down slippery slope. My younger brother started SAME way as you and was snorting Oxy a year later; he, like me, is a successful professional and never thought that would be us. It happens quickly and easily.

Almost everyone here has had bad experiences with narcotic pain pills or opiates of some kind.  It's going to be difficult for us to recommend you use these.  That doesn't mean you shouldn't use them.  It means you collect information, weigh risks vs benefits and make an informed decision.

If you use 20 - 24 per month I believe you will develop some level of dependence.  You will notice mild to moderate discomfort if you stop using them.  There is also the risk that your usage could increase.  Do you look forward to the euphoria?  Do you look forward to the energy boost?  These are warning signs.

I agree with Nomore. Heck I started out that way and ended up here 2 years later of 10+.  I thought I was strong and nothing could happen to me. WRONG….. It depends on the person there are ppl that can take just one  and just sometimes. The majority of ppl on this forum (not meaning to stereotype) are not like this and me included.

I guess I should have said Vicodin, not Norco. Of course, they are the same thing.......

I think if you can stay with one pill before golf you would be okay. But, the thing is that most people start that way and it eventually goes to two, then three, then it's out of control. The fact that you are concerned enough to find this forum and post a question about it should tell you something. Do you enjoy the euphoria you get from Norco? That would be a warning sign to me. I've been there. I would stop taking the Norco if it were me while you are still in control. Have you tried Advil or some other non-narcotic before golfing? It can be quite effective for pain. Good luck with whatever you decide.

yes those pills are highly addictive and your pain can possibly be handled with a non narcotic?? read some of the posts on this site MANY people here wish that they had NEVER started the one or two pill cycle just my opinion plus you might find your game is better without the cloud of the pills who knows my PCP is a super golfer and was almost broke in half in a serious auto accident and he eats advil three times a day he knows what can happen yet prescribed me NORCO for back pain and a few broken bones along a 15 year period yet always told me about the advil NOW I know why I got hooked on those things and played hell getting off
