I am 35 weeks pregnant and addicted to lortabs. I am trying to ween myself off so my baby won't be addicted at birth. What are the odds of him being addicted if I quit taking the pills today? Has anyone been thru this? How was their baby? I'm very scared. My due date is Sept. 2 but I'm having a csec Aug 24. Please don't judge me. I have serious back issues and have had 2 cervical fusions. I am here for help for my baby....

Second again to dominosarah  DO NOT GO COLD TURKEY!  Seriously, Rick is trying to help and he's right about being a parent being the best thing in the world.  Going from 10-10's a day to zero will probably put you in shock (manageable under most circumstances, i.e. not severe shock).  BUT being put under any shock when you're pregnant might kick in your bodies defense mechanisms.  And that would be very very very BAD for the youngster.  i.e. your body might start thinking it needs to preserve your life at all costs.

Normally I don't advise this but your case is special.  Find a doctor you can be totally honest with.  Most doctors are pretty reasonable about this sort of thing.  Explain your situation totally and honestly.  Make it clear you want to quit, and tell him your concerns.

We're praying for you and the new addition!  Be well mommy!

Please dont go CT off the pills.  That can send you into labor.  Talk with your doctor and be honest.  You wont be the first one that has done this.  Check into some recovery care also.  It will help.  Keep us updated on how you are doing........sara

Good luck. I feel your pain. I'm addicted to Lortabs also so I understand, definitely don't judge you. My prayers are with you. I have to agree with a comment earlier- YOU HAVE TO GET HONEST WITH YOUR OBGYN for the baby's sake. You can do it. Can't wait to hear your success story. Hang in there.....

I feel for both you and your baby.  You are not a bad Mom, and I really don't think you should try to go Cold Turkey either.  That would be very stressful for you and your Baby.

I do agree though that you need to be honest with your Dr.  Tell him that you were having breakthrough pain and that you started to take more medication than was prescribed.  He will have yours AND the Baby's best interest in mind, and can help you and the Baby, particularly because the Baby will be born addicted, and will need special care.

He can probably start you on a slow taper now so maybe it won't be so hard on the baby when he/she is born.

Don't be hard on yourself and blame yourself, just take care of yourself and your baby.

I probably take about 10 10mg of lortab a day. It's spaced out. I want to stop and think that dropping down 1 a day will help. As said before it's not about me anymore so I want to stop for my baby. But also for myself. I owe it to me and my kids. I think I just needed to get this off my chest more than anything. I'm confident in myself.

I just don't know enough about this so consult with a doctor. Wish you the best. Clean life is best life.

There are alternative pain meds, if you want to tell your doctor you want something non addictive, if you can go without tabs then you are a addict for these things. They will get the best of you in long run, I'm perfect example.  Just take steps to quit a stupid pill. How many MG you take a day?

CT could be worse than staying on the meds. If you go through withdrawal, so does the baby. It is often best to stay on until you deliver but your doctor should make that decision. Also, if you are not honest you run the risk of having social services intervene. You don't want that so honesty is the way to go.

Don't beat yourself up. It is not a matter of growing up. You know this not good for the baby so it is a matter of doing the right thing now.

Let us know what happens with the doctor.

and this preg. was a big surprise. I had surgery at the beginning of my pregnancy b/c we had no idea. I was scheduled to have a tubal right after my cervical fusion but that's when we found out I was pregnant. I have a wonderful 9 yr old and 2 wonderful step-children and I would and do do anything for them. They are my life. I am not a bad mom. Just an injured mom who needs help to stay out of pain.

Trust me. I know it's not about me anymore. I am scared and upset and saddened that I can't stop even with a life inside of me. I was hoping to get advice and maybe someone out there has been thru this too....

my doctor is aware of the medicine I take. Just now how much. I don't take way more the prescribed but I don't take it as directed either. It is charted in my medical chart what I am on so I'm not worried about getting in "trouble" I just don't want my baby to suffer like I suffer when I stop cold turkey. It's all I can think about when I don't take. And when I have 1 pill left I stare at the clock and try to decide when the best time to take is. I have tried just taking tylenol but my back hurts so bad. And carrying around a baby isn't helping either....

Wow, you really have a problem. Get off the tabs now. I have a kid, its not about u anymore. Please put your child first. Please don't take this wrong, but don't bring children into this world.until you get your life in order. You can do it, its time to grow up.

Hi,

No one here will judge you.

I do not think you should do the taper yourself or jump off and go through the withdrawal. You need to speak with your OBGYN and get honest about exactly how much and how often you are taking the pills. They need to know to help you and the baby now and they also need to know to be prepared in the event there are any problems with the birth. Most likely there will not be complications but there are no doctors here so you are best off getting with your doctor ASAP. Please do not hide anything from them.

Best of luck to you and your baby. Let us know.
