Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Some of you say, "Joy is greater thar sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.
you are a wise woman corey
Never read it but will check into it on Amazon. It relates so much to addiction bc we need to understand that pain and suffering are a part of life and we need to learn to be comfortable with these feelings as they are as much a part of us as happiness and joy. During wd we all have such a hard time being with our bad feelings and if we learn to become one with them we will see that we do cause most of them through our compulsive thinking. We never post enough about PAWS 3 and our Higher Power. Addiction is as much of a disease of the spirit as the mind/body.
I think it was in the Phrophet but I have used the quote more in my life than I can remember what he said regarding our children...
What do you all think the only ones to read it are teens of the sixties or the seventies I am a teen of the eighties. LOL
Kahlil Gibran Is a great author. Good choice. I need to read his books again.
It is not a garment I cast off this day, but a skin that I tear with my own hands.
Now you've got me reading it again, Mike
As is the procession and the self portrait
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.
The pain in life is what it is refering to.
"The Prophet" is a wonderous work of art, in it's entirety. A fitting quote, that you have given us.
The Prophet One of my most favorites books of all, I had forgotten about it. Thank you for the reminder, I need to read it, again, and now. Off to the the den :)
